To all you Guys and Dolls on TN, this is post is dedicated to all of you who always look at my pics and leave a note, some with the tongue in check as well. I do appreciate every comment an effort. I will be off site for about two weeks or so – I have some catch-up work to do, assignments to mark and we are going to Kruger National Park for a couple of days as well. I will be missing you, but also thinking of you as we maybe? See some nice, animals and birds, within the range of Big Bertha or the new 150 mm Macro.

I saw a similar post when I first joined TE nearly 3 years ago. I asked the guy how it is done, and never got a reply. Mogens has tried to help me, but because I did not understand Layers, I never could get it right. These are all b’flies, I shot in the last year, all with the OS lens, and hence not true macro pics. I am not a Lepidoptera fundi, and this is late so it is more the colour and the matrix here, than the b’flies.

Concept is simple. Decide what you wanted to do. I wanted 3 rows with 600 pixel wide X 600 pixel high frames, with a 50 pixel frame – this translate into 2000 x 2000 pixels. Open a new file in PS, with this size, at 72 PPI, with black BG. Make also a new file 600X 600 X 72 PPI with white BG. Select the white file –Ctrl A; Ctrl C to copy, then open the back file and past Ctrl V. Do this nine X, and move the white blocks into the matrix. Once you are happy all are lined-up – use arrow keys on keyboard for precise positioning, safe the file as a PSD file.
Open your nine files, do what you want to do to your pics, crop 600 X 600, change size to 72 and 600X 600, copy the same way and paste in the whites squares. Once all nine pics are pasted, make sure the frames match, delete all the white layers, flatten image Resize to 800 x800 and safe for web.
As Pieter always say, hit me, this is my first try at doing this.
Regards till later Callie

Oh! joli!
Quel beau patchwork de papillons!
Beau travail de présentation!

Well Callie, it seems like you finally got the frames right. This is a wonderful bouquet. The colours are fantastic and all pictures are very sharp and full of details. Now I have to blame you for missing my planned early bed with a good book. I simply cann't let this one go. Wvery picture would be an outstanding single-post.

Best wishes for you and your wife on the trip.

Nice collection Callie.
Hope you have a nice trip to Kruger.Don't get eaten!

Well, I've threatened to do this before, but if you keep showing b'flies this beautiful, I *will* show up on your doorstep with my sleeping bag in one hand and camera bag in the other ;-)))
I'd dearly love to see no. 4 in a bigger version some time, but they're all beautiful. Anyway, depending on the angle, a macro lens is not always a good thing for b'fly pics, as the DOF is too shallow for certain angles when the wings are spread out.
HAVE A KUNG-FU HOLIDAY ;-)))

Wonderful assortment of butterflies. You are so lucky to live in a country with so much animals of all kinds and colors.. Sharpness as usual, bright contrasting colors and nice montage.

And, in reply to your last comments, you may call me Nina or Ninadev, what ever you like. However, may I say that I'm not sure many women very much like to be called "doll" I presume it's how you call "girls or women" in South Africa, without being offensive. Guys and Gals would make me feel more comfortable. No offense, just makes me smile coming from someone living in another country. In french if you call a girl "poupée" (doll in french) you might get slapped in the face. LOL

Such a beautiful bouquet, Callie. It is your thank you, but I owe you some thank yous as well. Wish you a very pleasant stay at the Kruger park with your Sigma 150 and hope you present us some groovy macro shots. You lucky man! Thanks also for your workflow of the "tic-tac-toe" image; very generous on your part. I will keep it and sure try it some day. Take care!

Just Beautiful, Have a great trip, and bring us more of your great photos.

Have a nice and save trip, my Friend.

First but with excellent result Callie! Very colorful and 'African' :-) One from middle-left picture I like most. Have a nice trek!

About PS - I make my collages in slightly different way. First - open pictures for collage, resize, sharp, etc. I usually do stroke and border also. Then create new image and ctrl+c, ctrl+v processed images to new one. You have got one image with few layers. Move images in each layer to suitable position. Than save as jpg with maximum quality. Open. You have got image with mosaic of smaller ones with white space between them. Magic wand - mark white areas and then fill it with black. Voila!

Pts tomorrow, BTW :-)

Of course Callie - you're an expert on Layers now (that horrible L word!). I'll copy out what you've written and file it with your other instructions. Thankyou.
But have a good trip away. Don't worry about us, we'll all get on fine and we'll be good.
This is a beautiful Farewell gift - thank you Callie. It's quite wonderful.

Heya Callie! First of all; I hope you will have a great time in the Kruger Park! Man, I wish I could visit this park only once in my life ...! :) May you shoot some awesome pictures for us all to enjoy here at TN. Because what ever happens (even if you get eaten up by lions;)) ---> you have to come back here!
Your post is awesome! All 9 shots are very, very nice and I would have loved to see them a lot bigger, i.e. as single posts. TFS!
See ya later.

Thanks, Callie. Butterflies are flowers which fly.
I would have probably used the less wide black lines, but for a bouquet it is sometimes useful to use wide ribbons.
The card (note) accompanying it is very well tied up.
Good stay to Kruger. I look forward to see you back soon with a spark in your eyes ;-)

very nice job!the square cut out works very well.all pics are good, and good compo.well done!

Why you put all those beautiful pictures in one? You must post every pic! Thank you

Great nine-way-polyptych! The centre panel particularly stands out for me, the colours are wonderful and it seems really sharp. If I were to choose my least favourite, it's probably the shot in the top left - it just doesn't seem quite as sharp as the rest to me, although that could be an optical illusion, it's hard to say at this size ;) Anyway, just a note to say that you're missed, and a word or two of welcome when you return (soon I hope!). Hope you're feeling refreshed from your TN break, and look forward to seeing many more posts from you in the near future. Lovely work as ever, Adrian :-D

Hi, Callie,
Thank you for your beautiful composition. I like the regularity and homogene exposure of the patchwork. Each one fits very well with the global idea. Seems you are going to be busy, so, I remember what an englishman I worked for (long time ago!) always said to me "work hard, play hard". That' the best I can wish you in your next weeks activities. Best regards

Thanks so much not only for the great butterfly pics. but also for the details on how to achieve such a beautiful piece of artwork. I'll attempt to try this soon. The black borders look great.

Superb Cal, what a colours, happy and crispy all over. Every vlinder is so sharp and nice, really good shot, thanks for sharing this !

BRAVO

Excellent post Callie. Thanks very much, I include myself in the dedication, although you made me feel a bit guilty. I remember a workshop I made with one of your birds. You asked me how I did it, and with this note I remembered I never wrote a reply. Sorry for that... maybe I was also to busy learning how to take photos too. Regards, Felipe.
