A herd of Mongolian gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) running at sunset in the Eastern Mongolian Steppe.

This was the largest herd I encountered on this trip, probably totaling about 10,000 individuals (spread out from horizon to horizon). While this is a good sized herd, the largest ever recorded was well over 200,000 individuals. Documented by Kirk Olson and colleagues from UMass, the University of Maryland, and the Smithsonian Institution, this herd had an approximately 20km radius with a density estimated between 250 and 320 individuals/km^2 (Olson et al., 2009). This large herd size was probably the result of unusual rainfall patterns that left much of the steppe as unsuitable habitat.

These gazelles are an important part of local Mongolian culture and economy.

(The LP is a bit larger than I anticipated and quality has suffered...)

Hallo Jeff
I do not have much time, because I am on my way to Durban for a days training, but I cannot pass this wonderful panoramic view of the herd of Mongolian gazelles running at sunset in the Eastern Mongolian Steppe. The wide open space is breathtaking. The colours of early evening highly noticeable. A great view. A great scenery. I like the different layers in the image. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
