Allopiophila luteata (Piophilidae). Size ca. 3.5 mm.
This is a member of a small family of flies comprised of 23 genera and ca. 70 species worldwide. Larvae of most Piophilidae develop in carrion, those of Piophila casei may infest cured meat, smoked fish, and cheese, yet some prefer fungi (Mycetaulus, Amphipogon).
A number of these flies was observed around 8 p.m. deep in a wood on a trunk of a fallen pine tree supported by another tree at 30 degrees. This woodland species is probably xylophagous or connected with fungi, too. |

despite the f value there are still parts out of DOF, but the details on head are very pleasing.

Hi Dmitry,
Very interesting picture! I never saw a Piophilid before. You mastered all the photographic difficulties with such a small insect, it's incredibly sharp, focussed on the eye and arista. The light is perfect, glaring reflections held to a minimum. You could count the bristles if you had to! Thanks for presenting this extraordinary find!
