Pytho depressus (Pythidae).
Size 10 mm.
Nine specimens were found under bark of two dead pine trees. The beetles have contrastingly orange abdomen (not visible here of course). Only one specimen showed colour variability (which can be quite notable) having brownish elytrae with blue hint. Larvae with strongly flattened bodies were also present. Both adults and larvae feed on various decaying organic matter including dead insects but sometimes they may be predacious. They are usually associated with trees attacked by bark beetles (Scolytidae). Adults emerge in late August and early September, they hibernate with larvae which develop in two years. It's a fairly common species yet I meet it for the first time, another local species, P. abieticola, is rather rare.

Hi Dmitry,
good job on this small beetle. I never saw a member of this family, there are only two species of it in my region. Absolutely superb is your mastery of the reflexes, the sculpted elytrae are well presented. Your instructive comment enhances the value of the pic.
