Acanthoscelides obtectus (Bruchidae or Chrysomelidae/Bruchinae). Size ca. 3.5 mm.

Numerous beetles were detected in our supply of beans which immediately went to the waste basket.

This important pest originates from Central America as well as its host plants, Phaseolus spp. It was described in 1831 by Say and discovered in Europe in late 19th century. But it became a major pest only during the World War One and especially in subsequent years with beans widely imported as a substitute of meat.

The number of species in the genus Acanthoscelides is around 170 from Central and North America, with probably several hundreds more in South America. Existing division of the tribe Acanthoscelidini into genera was based on separate faunas of different zoogeographical regions so definitions of some genera are remarkably similar. There is still no good diagnosis for Acanthoscelides and Bruchidius which leaves their separation based mainly on criteria other than morphological differences, that is, Acanthoscelides - New World, Bruchidius - Old World.

Ciao Dmitry,

Saludos

Hi Dimitry,
excellent shot of a little seen Bruchid beetle, with subdued light all scales and bristles are evident. The picture is of high quality, even the facettes of the eye can be distinguished. Very well done, Dmitry.
Best regards
Dietrich
