An open country species found in cultivated fields, along roadsides and in scrub with long grasses. Often seen around marshy areas. Occurs mainly in coastal lowlands; on Sumatra occasionally recorded to 900m. Seen clearly when it sings from an open perch or flies briefly across the grass. Has a wobbly, top-heavy flight pattern that is typical of the genus.
