On a birdwatching day in the southern part of Belgium, I found this adult Middle Spotted Woodpecker nesting along the Semois River.

A survey of the distribution of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker in Belgium was recently undertaken by the "Centrale Ornithologique Aves". The number of occupied breeding territories is estimated at between 530 and 650. The tendancies of geographic and numbers progression have been ascertained. Three approaches to habitat confirm the restrictive character of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker, confined to large oak trees with a preference for stands with a relatively high trophic level. The ageing of oakwoods generally and mortality are suggested as being decisive for bird's present expansion. Attention must be drawn, however, to the probability of a future decline, not only because of the high rate of dying oaks but also because of a lack of young oak stands, and the phenomenon of splitting op going hand in hand with a possible reduction of habitats.

This is - again - a digiscoping shot using my favorite combination.

Stephane, excellent capture of your Woody at work. I would prefer a narrower DoF to bring your subject out of the BG.

Bel exemple de ce qu'on peut accomplir en digiscopie. Très bonne image de ce pic en pleine action.

Very nice image Stephane. Good action as well as DOF and POV. Great job

Very nice, overall the shot is of a very high standard. There is little to critique but if I am pushed I would ask for a little more light on the birds head. I realise this is always possible. Excellent.

fantastic shot here Stephane, sharp, colourful and useful note love it and well framed, Wel done.

Excellent post Stephane showing nice detail great composition and perfect presentation. Well done.

A very nice capture of this Middle Spotted Woodpecker. Good composition and color. Great timing to get him with a beak full of insect.

Nice for a digiscoping shot. Good composition and exposed well considering the bright background.

Excellent, Stephane !
This whole scene and surroundings, a spectacular shot of this "specht" catching its food, the right moment and a shot full of fine colours !
