FIRST, I WISH A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL TN MEMBERS !!! I hope the year begins nicely, and that everything is well for you.

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

The Nutria or Coypu (Myocastor coypus) is a large, herbivorous and semiaquatic rodent - he is the only member of the family Myocastoridae.

Originally native to temperate South America, it has since been introduced to North America, Europe, Asia and Africa, primarily by fur ranchers. Although it is still valued for its fur in some regions, its destructive feeding and burrowing behaviors make it an invasive species throughout most of its range.

Last summer, 5 of them went to live by the shores of our small lake. Very soon, the rumor spread to all the villages nearby, and people went to the lake to see them and to feed them. All the children wanted to see these new animals. They became less and less shy, they became quite fat, and they became friends with the ducks ! :-) But they remained wild animals, and as soon as anybody got too close they disappeared in their holes as quick as they appeared.

This morning, I went to the lake for completely other reasons, but then I noticed that there were many more animals than last time. I tried to count them, and I discovered that there were 4 babies - 2 of them were already half adults, and the 2 others still very small. They were swimming among the ducks, playing in the water and eating the old apples I threw them. It was wonderful to watch them.

I have several pictures, but I'm quite proud of this one. I could catch the mother and her baby when they were swimming together. They were so cute, so lovely... I could have watched them all day long ! :-)

I hope you appreciate it !

Hello Valerie,
Aren't they cute or what, a lovely scenery..!
Super image with great details, the fact the two swim diagonally adds dynamics and I notice how well they float in the water...
A good start of the year, maybe hard to match this one, hehehehehe!
...
And I wish that a HAPPY NEW YEAR will come your way!
Seasonal greetings from a chilly Norway,
Pablo

Hi Valerie,
a wonderful shot of these two Coypu, a sight we are not likely to see here in the wilds of the UK. Superb detail, very well framed and most importantly, a lot of character too! Very well done,
Paul

Bonjour Valerie!

All the best for you in 2008!

Very wet picture today! I like composition, it looks almost like synchronize swimming. Interesting animals, I know them from my holidays. Unfortunatelly they're breeded in Poland for theirs beautifull furs... Anyway, nice to see them in wild. And nice to see you my friend :-)

Hello Valerie,
Happy New Year to you...
I like your composition. Was looking for the shutter speed; that metadata is not disclosed, I see;-)
No, I mention the above 'cause you need a lot of light to get the photo sharp; these swimming animals are moving faster than you might expect; you do need a short shutter speed.
Well done
TFS
Annick

Hi Valerie,
What an interesting creature you have captured here! I have never heard of such an animal before. Is it like an otter? This is a beautiful composition, it gives a nice effect that one is bigger than the other! Very beautiful fluid texture of the water contrasting with the intricate detail captured in the fur. Very interesting note also. Thanks for sharing.
Roxanne

Cute photo with mother & child swimming side by side Valerie. Nice detail, color, DOF, and exposure.
I like the composition that has included the wake behind..A belated HNY to you also!
Howard

Hi Valerie

Nice to see you again in this new year (i know i'm a little late) and great to see you've made some cool friends ;)
I think you are quite fortunate to have found such a nice family of nutria and are able to take such excellent photos of them!
They are indeed very beautiful animals, but we don't get too see them so often here on TN...so don't worry about us getting bored :)
Out of the 3 photos you posted so far, i like this one the best - with the tandem swimmers :)
Their lovely colors and reflections from the fur make them stand out superbly here (even from the thumbnail). The details are terrific and the composition i find exceptional!

Bravo and TFS
Horia
