Lacerta agilis - sand lizard
Size: relatively large lizard, may surpass 20 cm in length, tail included, massively built.

Habitat: widely distributed from lowlands up to 1400 m high. It may be encountered in meadows, orchards, agricultural lands, road-sides, and watersides.

Behaviour: diurnal, not very agile species. Protected by its cryptic colours, has also other possibilities for escaping enemies: seeks shelter in the water, or climbs on trees. Can't be tamed in captivity, always trying to escape.

Food habits: eats arthropods, especially coleopterans, orthopterans and arachnids.

Reproduction: in June they lay a clutch of 5-13 eggs in a gallery dug in the ground. Eggs hatch after 45-60 days, and the hatchlings are 3-4 cm long.

Enemies: are mainly represented by snakes and raptors.

Conservation: although not endangered, the species is STRICTLY PROTECTED in Romania because some lowland populations are declining.
