A rare species in Portugal.
I only se it twice in my region.
It belongs to the Nymphalidae Melitaeinae Melitaeini.
The food plants of their caterpillars are Plantago, Centaurea and Veronica.
Known in english as Glanville Fritillary. In portuguese doesn’t have a common name yet.
It is one of the first species flying on spring in Portugal and we can see it fly from May to June.
The wingspan on males is 38 - 46mm and on females from 44 - 52mm. |

today you show the next beautiful picture of a Melitaea species.
Almost the entire speciemen is included in tthe depth of field.
Only the right wing tip is a bit out of focus.
Background design, colours and light are well balanced.
