Another gift for you Love is in the air

Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Nymphalidae

Small pearl bordered fritillary (correct me if I'm wrong)
It is widespread throughout Europe, ranging from Scandinavia and northern Spain and from Britain eastwards towards Russia and Asia.

Pearl-bordered fritillaries live in woodland clearings where trees have recently been cut down or coppiced, and where there are areas of grass, bracken and open scrub. They live in small populations, but these populations are linked and butterflies often fly between different colonies that are sharing a suitable habitat. The pearl-bordered fritillary depends on a mosaic of open areas for movement between colonies and for food.
Like other species of fritillary, the males have special scent glands on their wings so that they can be recognised by females of their own species and therefore find a suitable partner. After mating the female will lay her eggs on the leaves of violet plants which then hatch after 10-14 days.
The emmerging caterpillars begin feeding immediately and will moult three times within the first 5-6 weeks. Each caterpillar will then hibbernate in a shrivelled laef at the base of the plant, usually at the end of July. When they awaken the following March, they are half their previous size having shrunk during hibbernation. After a period of feeding and growth, during which it has moulted one last time, the caterpillar is full size and ready to pupate. The chrysalis stage last just 10-14 days. The adult butterfly flies between late April and June.
Both caterpillars and adult butterflies feed on common dog-violet and sometimes heath dog violet and marsh violet.
Changes in woodland management over recent years have led to the decline of the species.
In some countries like in England this is endangered species.

Hello Tanja,
you captured the scene / the moment very well. Excellent focus, wings of both male and female are shown with high sharpness. Colours of the butterflies, the plants and the environment look very natural. I think it is a couple of
- Melitaea phoebe
- family: Nymphalidae
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Tanjs

What a splendid macro shot from you!
Great and very sharp details here with an excellent DOF to go along with them. The result is that both of the 2 beauties are in terrific focus and they look gorgeous.
The composition is unique and very interesting with you tilting the image or camera to such an angle...very interesting and refreshing :)

Bravo and TFS

Hello Tanja,
Fine sharp capture of a pair of Knapweed Fritillaries, a variable species, in and interesting and unusual composition. Interesting to see the female lifting her abdomen to give her scent to the male. This is a fine contribution to TN!
Well done and TFS!

Hi Tanja,
Not one but two, wow, I have trouble capturing an image of one. The sharpness and colouring is great in this image and this give us an opportunity to examine the detail well. Good one.

Hello Tanja,
Love is in the air and the whole world is twisted when you're chasing your belovew one :-)
Extremely dynamic shot, technically fine.
Lovely presentation!
Best greetings ad TFS,
Michal

Hello Tanja,
this is a marvellously recorded encounter of a couple of Melitaea phoebe in more than just flirting approach. Perfectly visible by its shadow: the lady`s abdomen invitingly presented to the male, both butterflies perfectly clear and sharp, and a good glimpse of the environment of meadow on a dam including the surface of water in the distance.
Have seen the same species under very similar conditions near Vienna a few days ago, but have not been tht lucky to record such a successful flirting.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter
