The limestone island of Öland is not only known for its birds, it is also famous for its unique plant life that includes many species of orchids. On this visit we were anxious to find the Burnt Orchid that grows on the expansive steppe land known as Stora Alvar.

Burnt Orchid (Orchis ustulata)

Swedish name: Krutbrännare, meaning ‘gunpowder burner’. Both the English and Swedish names refer to the tip of the flowering stem that looks like it is burning but consists of unopened dark red flower buds.

It is a small species of orchid easily overlooked, but once spotted one can usually see many more. The tallest is about 25 cm (10 in.) high. Here the tallest was about 15 cm (6 in).

It is almost always found in the open on dry lime-rich soils. It is dependent on grazing to prevent it being dominated by higher vegetation that can eradicate it. Though widespread in Europe it is regarded as rare and Oland is its Swedish stronghold. All orchids are protected in Sweden.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my long lens hand held and after moderate cropping it was selectively sharpened. The afternoon sunshine was shining but it was difficult to get a sharp shot as it was windy, as it often is on Stora Alvar

Very good macro of this Orchis, natural colors and good details, very good presentation to!

Dear Ivan!

I'm impressed and glad about the way you take your pictures handheld. Glad because I almost never use a tripod, too. When I hike through my rivers and mountains I already carry quite heavy material with me.

I like the simplicity of your picture very mch. I also like orchids a lot and its always a pleasure to look at them out in nature. Your picture reflects the flower's characteristics at best.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Ivan,
This rare wild plant differ from other meadow plant. I this spring met only one accidentally about 2km from my home and then searched and didn't find any more on whole meadow. You used low POV so visible almost all the details.
Regards, Pawel

Bonjour Ivan,

Hi Ivan,
I am fascinated to see your excellent image of this "Burnt Orchid": I have just returned from a holiday on the Escarpment. Most photos are of plants ca 15-20 cm high, and I have great difficulties to ID them... One of them has tiny, dark-red buds, which look like a bit like the top of your flower on the right side of your photo.

Having said all that, it is truly a pleasure to admire your perfect image. I just encountered the same weather conditions i.e. either drizzle or strong winds and therefore appreciate the perfect focus you have achieved!

I think, EVERY nature lover is enamored with orchids, and you make us think "wished I was there...

Have a nice evening
Warm Regards
Ingrid
