Little known backyard bugs:

The 7 mm long plant bug (Heteroptera; Miridae; Closterotomus biclavatus (Herrich-Schaeffer 1835) =Calocoris biclavatus; Zweikeulen- Weichwanze) is a real beauty, not rare at all but it may be easily overlooked. The species can be found from Northern Europe to the Northern Mediterranean and from Western Europe to Middle Asia . It lives on various dwarf bushes, trees but also Urtica like on this image and is zoo-phytophagous, sucking at plant parts or on aphids.

The title "Hook'em Horns" came to me with the bug's antennae like Longhorn beetles have, the citation has to do with American Football, Texans will know >:-)

ID: I used the fantastic book of E. Wachmann et al. 2004. Wanzen Bd. 2. Goecke& Evers, Keltern, Germany that not only depicts all species but also is the hell of a lesson in macro photography. The species (I think its a "first" on TN) looks similar to Closterotomus fulvomaculatus but the antennae are different (no clublike segments like in C. biclavatus). A third species, C. norwegicus is yellow and green colored (Silvio mounted a picture of one).

Hi Dietrich.
Perfectly composed shot of a beautiful specimen of a beetle. Details and sharpness of the insect and leaf are extreme. I also like impressive X-composition of a shot. Excellent use (as always) of superb macro equipment. Bravo.
Alexei.
