Back from the trip to Morocco:

"The Rock" of Gibraltar is commonly known as a former military fortress. The greater part of its steep slopes constitutes the "Upper Rock Nature Reserve" today. Since the access is by narrow and precipitous "goat trails" it is not visited much. We wandered for a whole day from one pleasant surprise to the next, we met not only Barbary macaques but also interesting plants, reptiles, insects and, as seen here, a breeding Yellow legged gull (Laridae; Larus michahellis) with its freshly hatched young under its wing. And the leaf hiding the bird is of the European fan palm, Chamaerops humilis, the only native palm species in Europe. Oh, by the way, we were not intentionally disturbing the gull, it bred right on the path.

ID: there is some confusion in the scientific literature concerning the genus Larus. Reports about the genetic differentiation of gulls (see D. Liebers et al. 2001 in Molecular Ecology 10: 2447-2462) lead to the conclusion that the Caspian gull (L. cachinnans) and the Yellow legged gull (L. michahellis) are well apart. L. michahellis used to be treated as a race of L. cachinnans.

Slav Dîetrîch,
Good capture with fine focusing and nice composition. Thanks for sharing.

too bad, i will be in the south of spain at the end of august, with the breeding time being over. a visit to gibraltar is
planned, but i guess i will the only one from our group that would spend a longer time in the nature reserve...
anway, nice and clear capture of the breeding gull. i wonder how close you got to it without being attacked.
