While on our way to Linn of Dee just outside of Braemar, we ran by this stag standing in this pasture eating the fresh grass. We pulled over and I quickly took out the 400mm lens and positioned me behind a foot high stone wall. My dad got his video camera and was about to position him behind the car when the stag looked into his direction wandering what this bearded man was going to do.

When I do photograph animals, which is not ofter, I try to get a kind of human expression in the face of the animal. It is also something I look for when looking at wonderful photos on TN. This one really did it for me because his expression shows a slight confused and curious look.

After this photo the stag faced me again. He first couldn't spot me, because I was lying flát on the floor behind the wall. He took a few step forward and raised his head as high as possible. (I will post one of those moments some other time) At one point I can remember that he gave me a pose that reminded me of Jaegermeister. I know I got a few loose bolts.

Today I got my second milestone, I uploaded my 200th photo to TN. I never guessed I would get that many when I started on TN back in january 2006. When I look back to all my photos, I can see that I have improved a lot. This improvement couldn't have happend without the wonderful support of all my TN friends. I do hope that my learning curve is still going up, and that I will write about the same with my 400th photo. Thank you for the support and for all the wonderful critiques.

Hi Niel
Happy 200th Post ;)
This deer does have a cute expression, almost a puzzled look. I like the location you captured here with the dark background. This deer has quite a heavy coat for July, it must be a cool part of Scotland. The framing, colours, lighting and detail are all great. Again happy 200th.
TFS and for your help over the past year.
Janice

Hi Niek,
Firstly may i say congratulations on your 200th post here on TN. Your presence here is one of constant constructive encouragment, as well as posting work that gives us all something to aspire to.
As for this shot, the expression that you have captured is priceless. Perfect focus and a great POV from so low down, it seems that this fine Stag is stood in a sea of flowers. Very well done.

Wonderful capture, Niek. Great details. That 400 earned it's keep on this one. I think the expression is that he is clearly watching you. He reminds me of the stag in the move "The Queen".
Mike
P.S. Congrats on #200!

Hello Niel,
What a beautiful catch! Lovely Stag
Wonderful colors and details, great POV
and lovely composition, great pose.. Well done

Everton.

Congratulations on number 200! We have both come a looooong ways. We have an expression "... having a screw loose" but "bolts" works just as well and is possibly funnier. : ) I will neither confirm nor deny your diagnosis! I'll have defer to the stag's assessment! I do like its quizzical expression. It is a nice sharp, well exposed image. One has to wonder why they don't more often break those skinny legs! It is fortunate that you had such a simple even-toned background. It sets off your subject nicely.

Hi Niek...majestic springs to mind here. Good backdrop creating a vertical and horizontal canvass. Nice touch at the feet were the oof grass blends nicely but doesn't obstruct. Pose is classic with slight tilt of the head. best, Brat.

Niek good evening, excel this photograph, well vu.Bravo

Mich,

Hello Niek,

Gongratulations with your 200th image here on TN Niek.
And it's a beautiful one.
Love the frontal shot and pose of the deer.
Vertical composition, lighting and sharpness are excellent and the background, with the large trees and foreground with the lovely soft green color of the grass and yellow color of the flowers, are most wonderful.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards,
Harry

Hi Niek,
A regal looking stag. Spot on exposure has the colors and detail looking excellent. I love the yellow wild flowers! Hey congrats, on the 200th post! So many excellent shots from you.
Scott

I have to agree with you. The look on his face is very captivating. It's character like this that stands out. It's a beautiful animal standing in whispy grass. Nice shot all around. I'm glad your shots are improving with time. This certainly says something about your eye training. Very well done. TFS.

Hi Niek,

Hoi Niek,

Groeten,
John.

Hello Niek,
A majestic fellow with a funny expression!
In fact he looks like he just put a question, curious for the answer, tilting his head...
Great focus and fine details, light makes the antlers really stand out!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Congrats on #200, a worthy milestone indeed!!

Priceless expression on this goofy looking stag, if the name 'Bullwinkle' wasn't already handed out to a moose, I wouldv'e surely given this fellow the name. Very nicely done Niel. :)

Hi Niek

I love this guys antlers. Look at all that velvet. Beautiful. He has a great looking face and the entire scene is lovely. Thank you! :-)

Hi Niek,
Nice clear clean capture, a very nice photo. The photo is full and well seen.
regards,
Matt.

Hello Niek,
Perfect DOF, isolating the subject in the frame well. The vertical composition is great for this one..Natural looking color with nice details. I like the color FG and OOF vertical trunks BG that add to the composition as well. Congrats :)
Very well done.

Hello Niek.
Wow! What a wonderful capture. I've been to Scotland and never saw one. I can't believe you can see amazing animals like this by the roadside. Great sharpness and composition. A magnificent shot. Well done once more.

Laying "flat" on the floor.!!! That is a REAL PROFESSIONAL talking.
Hello Niek,
Have not visited you for awhile.

Best of the best to you, my DEAR friend,
