It is obvious how much Steve Reekie (Lordpotty) and Grzegorz Wieczorek (Red45) love these things and they have presented us with some fabulous shots of many weird and wonderful fungi that I think they deserve something back.

So this is for you Steve and Grzegorz :)

This is actually my first posting that has anything to do with fungi!

I hope you like it!

Fungi (pronounced /ˈfʌnjaɪ/, singular fungus /ˈfʌŋgəs/) are a kingdom of eukaryotic organisms. The fungi are heterotrophic organisms characterized by a chitinous cell wall, and in the majority of species, filamentous growth as multicellular hyphae forming a mycelium; some fungal species also grow as single cells. Sexual and asexual reproduction is commonly via spores, often produced on specialized structures or in fruiting bodies. Some fungal species have lost the ability to form specialized reproductive structures, and propagate solely by vegetative growth. Yeasts, molds, and mushrooms are examples of fungi. The fungi are a monophyletic group that is phylogenetically clearly distinct from the morphologically similar slime molds (myxomycetes) and water molds (oomycetes). The fungi are more closely related to animals than plants, yet the discipline of biology devoted to the study of fungi, known as mycology, often falls under a branch of botany.

Occurring worldwide, most fungi are largely invisible to the naked eye, living for the most part in soil, dead matter and as symbionts of plants, animals, or other fungi. They perform an essential role in all ecosystems in decomposing matter and are indispensable in nutrient cycling and exchange. Some fungi become noticeable when fruiting, either as mushrooms or molds. Many fungal species have long been used as a direct source of food, such as mushrooms and truffles and in fermentation of various food products, such as wine, beer, and soy sauce. More recently, fungi are being used as sources for antibiotics and various enzymes, such as cellulases, pectinases, and proteases, important for industrial use or as active ingredients of detergents. Many fungi contain bioactive compounds, such as alkaloids and polyketides that are toxic to animals including humans that are, therefore, called mycotoxins, and some fungi are used recreationally or in traditional ceremonies as a source of psychotropic compounds. Several species of the fungi are significant pathogens of humans and other animals, and losses due to diseases of crops (e.g., rice blast disease) or food spoilage caused by fungi can have a large impact on human food supply and local economies.

Thankyou!

hello Joe,
Very beautiful assemblage! Every single picture is interesting and nicely presented. I especially like the one on the top right, where one of the fungi just shows a part of its hat! Quite funny.
Thanks a lot. It is also a nice dedication to our fungi spoecialists.
Best regards
Anne

Excellent collage Joe :-) Thanks very much for dedication, I'm glad that you turned your cam to fungi :-) First post with them? Hard to believe - every picture looks very good and is worth to be posted alone. I like all, but my favourites are top ones. Left, because of woodlice and right, because it has great composition - fungi look like passers-by dissapearing in underground entrance :-)
Big thanks again!

Hi Joe,
Simply sensational!
Wonderful collection of fungi!
Admirable photographic work!
Thanks for sharing.
Well done!
Best wishes,
José Roberto

This is an outstanding montage Joey with crystal clear images that show us of huge variety of fungies. This is not that easy to photograph those little ones (I have never succeeded correctly) and you did great with all those shots. This is very well done and nice dedications. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Joe,
Sorry for delay, but during a normal day I usually do not have to much free time to write any comment. On the other hand I do not want to overlook pictures which are interesting for me - like this one :)

Hi Joe

What a great collection of Funghi. Strangely I only see red, yellow and orange ones. I love the black one with the redish brown top. Great POVs and sharp focusing in all of them. Great post

Bonne journée.

Hi Joe,
I did see this the other day and thought I had written something, but something must have gone wrong when I hit the Add button.
Thanks very much for putting together this excellent collage for me and Greggzy.
I think all the species here are ones I have seen in New Zealand too although I couldn't name them all.
I like the little woodlouse under the Auricularia at the top left.
I see you've also got a couple of Ganoderma there,a Macrolepiota,an Entoloma, possibly a Cortinraius and the ones in the middle could almost be magic mushrooms except for the yellow stain which suggests something else.
A great collection, very nicely put together.
Thanks for this.
Nice work.
Steve
