This isn't a wild bird. I went to a craft fair today to buy a few Christmas presents and found a bird santuary raising some money. They take in ill, orphaned or hand-reared birds. They had a few owls with them to help raise money and they kindly let me take a few picture (at a distance and without a flash).

This Eagle Owl had impressive orange eyes. The following information is from the The Hawk Conservancy Trust website

Range
The Eurasian Eagle Owl is quite a common bird throughout northern Europe and Scandinavia, and into Russia.

Its preferred habitat is coniferous forest, where it is most adept at navigating between the trees in very subdued light!

Diet
The Eurasian Eagle Owl is, by virtue of its size and strength, well up in the food chain. It is capable of taking medium sized mammals up the the size of a rabbit.

The egg-laying of the female is very much tied to food supply. In lean years she will lay only one egg (if any), whereas when food supply is good, she will lay a clutch of four or five.

Voice
The main call of the Eagle Owl is a single, drawn out, booming "Oo-hoooh". This they use to call to each other to and fro, sometimes for hours at a stretch, across relatively large tracts of countryside.

On occasions it also utters a coarse "Kraaaaah"

In forested areas of northern Europe, which are typically inhabited by a number of species of birds of prey, there is often animosity between species. Here the Goshawk and Eurasian Eagle Owl are probably the most murderous!

The Eagle Owl is even known to tackle, quite successfully, raptors as large and swift as the Peregrine Falcon!

The Eurasian Eagle Owl is arguably the largest species of owl in the world (although a large Blakiston's Fish Owl may be slightly larger). In captivity, with access to medical care, regular food and, of course, no threat from predators or humans they may enjoy a life expectancy well in excess of 40 years.

Based on observations in the wild, those birds who survive the first year may expect to live for a total of 12-15 years.

Hello Karan, nice shot. Looks like you are enjoying your new camera. Good ocmposition and colours. Perhaps a little bit underexposed - myabe it could do with a little bit of sharpening. Well done.

Such an intense gaze, it leaves you feeling a bit intimidated by the closeness.
Focus and DOF are exceptional.
Highly impressive. I strive to have a photo as this to hang in my living room.
Well done. TFS. James

Hola Karan, estupenda macro, bellos ojos y excelente color y detalles... muchos saludos Victor

This is an interesting and intense composition of this wonderful owl. I so prefer the owl not looking straight at the viewer. It is a well executed photo. I have the same lens so I will have to see what I can do up close one of these days.

Hi Karan,
When I saw the thumbnail, I tought you used your zoom lens again. But then I saw you used the kit lens and kept the promise of not using the the zoom until x-mas. As Paul mentioned, its a little soft in certain places, but the moment captured and te frame filling composition is awesome.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Karan!
Excellent capture! I like this "angry" look it does have :)
Greetings,
Vanilla

Excellence! Wow.. I'm blown away by this picture! I love the absolute clarity of this picture which allows me to appreciate all the fine details of the extreme closeup portrait of this owl. It's eyes are mesmerizing! I really love the brown toned colors displayed here.. and the feathers make it look so soft and inviting.
A great one.

Hi Karen,

lovely shot, those eyes are almost hypnotic! i posted a shot of one of these beauties on here a while but didn't manage to get any close ups that were any good like yours. i really like the frame filling as mentioned by everyone else and think you've done well to get this sort of detail from a distance with a subject that will move if and when it wants to!

Cheers

Paul

Hello Karan,
What a great shot! How could it be possible with the 17-85mm? You were really close I guess. This is very well done with excellent POV, details and composition. I'm amazed that you got such result with this lens; I mean, this is a great zoom but you had to be very close ;) Thanks,
Claudine

Great capture Karen, because of those eyes your tight composition works very well here. Very well done.

that is a stunner and being 1/4 profile..or 3/4 whatever...has more of a head feel to it
far sharper than the other one with eyes to match
glad to see you do get close...for this bird intimacy is required to review its beauty
thanks
