Trying out methods for photography of insects in flight:
As promised I come back to TN after trying out new techniques. Here is one: The flying Artogeia rapae male (summer brood of the Small White, Kleiner Kohlweissling, Petit Blanc du Chou. Pieridae) was pictured using a tele lens, a short shutter speed, manual focussing and a TTL flash. Focussing remains guesswork.
Butterflies are not known for flight efficiency, their bumbling flight resembles more an air show than a race. Indeed, species and sex recognition is facilitated that way. But precision flying is still possible even with stiff wings. Each wing's angle of attack can be changed independently in both forewing and hindwing, left and right. The up- and downstroke is synchronized. The abdomen serves as a balancer like in beetles. See whether you can confirm anything of that in the picture. Roland Bassin (rbassin) did the same exercise before me. Here it is.

Bonjour Dietrich
C’est une superbe prise en vol, bien maîtrisé la difficulté, le résultat est très bon.
Bonne netteté grâce au 4000 e de sec.
Bonne soirée

Hi Dietrich, fantastic result of your attempt, your note and your exif data are very interesting, but as i can read, the focus is always the most big problem. This is absolutely amazing, you freeze the pieridae in a perfect way,the sharpness is the best as possible,i like it! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

The TOY you got is the perfect tool and this guide us to a step ahead as for many of us the static butterfly is a challenge and you did this in fly, amazing.
