While I was walking around a lake, this fast and fearful bird appeared between the marshes. It was between me and the evening sun when I presssed the shutter.

Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) tr:Saztavuðu

The moorhen is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird, that is usually found near water. From a distance it looks black with a ragged white line along its body. Up close it is olive-brown on the back and the head and underneath are blue-grey. It has a red bill with a yellow tip.

Where does it live?
Freshwater lakes, rivers, ditches, small ponds; even in urban areas,

Where to see it
There’s a chance of seeing a moorhen anywhere where there is water – from a small ditch or a lake in a city centre park, to a big lake or reservoir.

What does it eat?
Water plants, seeds, fruit, grasses, insects, snails and worms.

What does it sound like?
It's most familiar call is a loud, abrupt ‘kurr’uk’.

Hi Faith

Great capture of the Moorhen running across the water, its a lovely composition, it would be nice to have more space in front but you can't always manage this when a moment like this happens and I do like the trial in the water too, nice backlighting behind the wings too. I think he is running away from my moorhen next door :o)

TFS Hilary :o)

Hello Fatih,
What a beautiful action shot. So cool to see the water still up in the air while the Moorhen is already two steps further. I noticed that others would like to see more space infront of the bird. But then the entire effect of the speed would be gone. Now the main focus is on the trace of water and then on the bird. I lvoe the exposure, leaving the BG nice and dark and lighting up the water splash and tip of the wings. Superb reflection.

Hello Fatih,
funny shot posted.
The details on the backlight are great.
Lovely compo and good info notes.

Great action capture, and you make well use of light to create this fine effect!
Congrats and greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Fatih,
Very good picture of this moorhen running on the surface of the water. The composition is good and I've the same opinion as SunToucher about the space infront of the bird. What is interesting is behind the bird. The splash of water is interesting. The only little thing is that the bird is not easy to see with the dark background.

Dear Fatih,
Super capture of the Moorhen. The photograph shows how fast a bird can be before it's weight cracks the surface tension of the water film. TFS.
