"ONE FOR THE ROAD".
You may read details of the Asian Elephants right here.
However, I wish to share a bit of the 5 elephants at the Calgary Zoo.
Yes, we have 5 of them. They are housed in a massive huge structure with wide open spaces on both its sides. You may call them 'sideyards' and not 'backyards'. The large spaces of these two 'sideyards' are in keeping with the necessities of the large sized pachyderms we have. It's fun to see them enjoy the outdoors when they are let outside.
There is a big male called "SPIKE". He was born on July 1st. 1981 at the Miami Metro Zoo; we acquired him on 19th. September 1992. He is large with metal caps on his tusks; the caps are to prevent breakage. Just as all males he too is a loner; and, approaches the herd only when he smells "an odour" of a female in heat just about to ovulate. He has a very co-operative disposition for a bull elephant and works well with the keepers. Normally during mating season they can become "rogues" and even kill their keepers. In Calgary, so far, we have been very fortunate with a 'tame' bull.
Then we have "KAMALA" , orphaned shortly after birth in Sri Lanka; and, we got her in 1976 along with "SWARNA" also orphaned at birth. Kamala is the matriarch of the herd. She is a WORLD RENOWED painter. Her paintings go for as high as $100.00 a piece. In Hindi her name means "lotus blossom/flower". She gave birth to "MAHARANI" , third to the right, a few years ago. The later is now part of this herd. And, a few months ago Kamala delivered "MALTI" to us, Calgarians.
You are seeing "SWARNA" doing what comes 'naturally'. I thought "SWARNA" had finished her 'business'; but, no. She had not. And, that's why I titled this image "ONE FOR THE ROAD". Swarna means "Precious one".
"Spike" has been 'eyeing' "Swarna" now a days. Looks like our 'stud' is doing his duty. We'll know in about 22 months. That's how long it takes to 'gestate'. The calf is ready to come out at 19 months; however, it stays on to 22 months to grow within the womb to get tall enough to nurse once it is out.
In the wild 'poaching' has become a serious issue specially among the African species.
In Asia these animals, the largest mammal on earth, has been used for labour, wars, ceremonies, sports and turism. The African one is not that tameable. The son of Hamilcar Barca, "Hannibal", a Carthaginian military commander, marched his war elephants over the Pyrenees and the Alps to invade Northern Italy in about 200 B.C.
Am sure they left a lot of "ONE FOR THE ROAD" along the way.
