Don't Write Your Photos Off is what I have titled today's offering. It is mighty temping to look at one's own photo and delete it and in doing so lose a valuable document of a moment in time but before you ever do that out of hand reconsider doing so, as much can be done to help images along. This is more so for those of you who are new to digital photography. To quote my own words found in my introduction-"The thing is to do what you can with what you have available to you at the time:be it dull or spectacular all records of life on our sweet planet are precious and shouldn't be taken lightly even if the photo is not a gold winner".I really do mean those words and even if you get discouraged, remember even pros take poor or bad photos from time to time,it just goes with the territory and can't be helped.Photography after all is about capturing light in all conditions and times of day and trying to be faithful to the subject and it's surroundings. So what can be done?A photo editor that gives you the basic control factors of sharpening, colour saturation and contrast/brightness can really bring a photo back from the dead.Sometimes a result will be grainy and so another control factor of noise reduction is useful as well, but you do not want to over do it as details will become less fine.Play with your image until you are happy with the results, as how the outcome looks for the most part is a subjective one.The rule of thirds is a good general guide for how the image can be cropped, but it isn't written in stone, remember it is subjective and in the end if your images pleases you,who could ask for more. The good people here on TN are an great help with their critiques and tips as I have learned much in the nearly two years on this site.I dedicate this photo to everyone here on TrekNature and to on lookers as well.

This is a photo of an immature American Bald Eagle taken on an overcast day in Calgary's Fish Creek Park. The white head and tail feathers take four years to appear on the adult birds and in the workshop I have the cropped but otherwise unaltered photo of the same.My point is simple Don't Write Off your photos as you might like how they look after some adjustments.

My advice is much the same Bob...which is one small part of why I am found asking my news site people to contribute money...Strange...I have one internal, 2 external HD's..and I only reject an image if it is totally out of focus...Would you believe that a picture of a human might also contain 50% of a forest with high contrast, colour and such? I reckon you do know...and this by the way is a fine image to add to your gallery..I wonder now...Alberta,,,E Washington...we seem to have a very large number of photographers with good eyes and good gear....in my case the later has me begging...

Hi Bob,

I’m also glad you are my neighbour this evening and have your nice picture beside.
You Bald Eagle is very impressive as subject and quality. The young Eagle is very imposing already and your picture shows this very well. The colours are nice and well saturated. I like your note and your comments about thinking twice before delete a photo. Myself, I keep all of them, good or bad, lake the diary of that day.

Regards, Mario

Hello Bob

A beautiful capture of this immature Bald Eagle.
Your words are very true, and with the advances in digital technology who is not to say that software in the future will not be able to enhance and correct some of our perceived mistakes.Just think of all that we can do now that we could not imagine just a few years ago.
This shot has lovely rich colours.
Lovely POV,you really managed excellent plumage detail,
Great job and wonderful inspirational notes to go along.
Good post.

Hello Bob,

The POV you have chosen prouved to be a very inspired one. You have got a fine eye contact with the bird depite your rear position. Bird is sharply shown and there are many color tones rendered in it's plumage. There is also a good contrast between the bird and the background.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

very good posture of the bird. the eye contact is fantastic.

p.s. some branches from background are distracting

Hi Bob,
I so agree with you on writing photos off. I still have very bad photos in my archive that I like to keep. It might not be a TN worthy photo, but its my memory of a place visited. And sometimes after looking at it for a long time, I do see an opportunity to edit the photo in such a way that it does become an uploaded version. But I do think that a photo needs to have a potential to make it into a final result.

I am sure that the original one of this photo had the potential and its a fact that you saw it. The result is a great one with a perfect composition and good detail.
TFS,
Niek

Wonderful image Bob, with great composition, pose, colors and details. Great note and marvelous work Bob, thank you.

This is amazingly sharp and well exposed Bob. I like it a lot. The branch and the natural framing is lovely. I'm wondering how far you were from the eagle?
