This photo is the first one of a wild animal that I have taken with my new camera. The Rock dove or pigeon is one of the world's most common birds and they can be found in just every major city in the world. To photo one of these birds is almost a photographic waste of time as they are just too common. The thing is though they may be common birds, they still present a level of difficulty in getting in flight shots of and as well as decent colour and exposure,so with those things in mind, not a single wild animal should be over looked and needs to be appreciated for what it is.I saw this bird flying back and forth from a nest it was building under a foot bridge to the ground below the nest.In the workshop I have a shot of it carrying a small twig to add to it's nest. The light was fair to poor at the time and the photo in the workshop reflects the low light level I had to work with. When I see a bird in flight or doing something I don't often see, regardless of the species,I try and get photos of it and what it is doing .as doing so is a challenge and for me,fun to do.I wish the better image were the workshop photo as it the more interesting of the two in my opinion.Bob

Dear Bob!

I don't like the term of common. It is deprecative. We tend to associate the quantitty with the common. In this case we should also stop to take pictures of human beings: there are milliards of them on this planet...

Your picture is the proof that even very common animals can provide great pictures. Yours is just superb. The dynamics created by the moving wing contrasts so nicely with the bird's head and its position. The blurred background highlights the fine details of the beautiful and coloured plumage.

A common bird, an outstanding picture...

Kind regards

Markus

Hallo Bob
This might be a common bird, but in my personal opinion these are birds that show a pure and/or innocent personality, and I tend to agree with Markus that I do not like the word common.
The most beautiful part on this image is the bird’s colourful layers of purple and jade in the plumage around the neck. It is soft to look at and a definite eye-catcher. Lovely in motion pose captured. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards
Anna

Hi Bob,

Super shot, the details and the colours are just stunning, perfect in-flight image with just a hint of movement. Pin sharp and well framed and composed. Looking forward to seeing more on the 5D Mark II, all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

Wonderful in flight capture Bob!!
I have had a fascination with pigeons all my life. I used to raise roller pigeons, therefore I never get tired of viewing images of them.
Love the full opened wing presentation and gorgeous iridescent colors!! Well done!!!
Ron
