Today I break from my purist attitude of only photoing wildlife out in it's natural environment and give for you a view of two very rare birds, the Whooping Crane. These two elegant and stately birds were photoed in the Calgary Zoo in rather harsh afternoon light(another thing I do not normally do).I was transfixed looking at these two birds I just couldn't take my eyes off of them and I took many photos.Whooping Cranes are amongst the rarest of all living things on our planet and the best part of it for me is they live in the wild here in Alberta in a place call Wood Buffalo National Park in the far north. It is in that park where these birds nest and raise their young and getting to the park is just about impossible for the average person and it is for the best anyhow, when you consider that fewer than 300 of these birds exist in the wild. The Calgary zoo has a program that raises these rare birds and also the very rare Swift Fox as well.It is to the zoo's credit that they do so and everyone gains benefit from the animals to we people.Yes, I was transfixed but what a sight to feast one's eyes on!These birds are very much endangered but with care and nurturing they have gone from only 15 wild birds in the 1940s to almost 300 in the here and now.I will be happy when their numbers are near to the historic high of an estimated 1700 or so birds as was the case just over 100 years ago.Whoopers were never very common and will always be endangered from we humans, predators and poor weather.I hope you enjoy these two birds photoed in the Calgary Zoo and do not mind my making an exception to my rule.

Hello Ron,
Here I'm also making an exception to my rule in not giving critique on shots of life in captivity, but this is a great photo of this pair of Whooping Cranes.
The pose of the one while the other is on the nest is excellent and taken from a great POV among the reeds with fine sharpness and lighting.
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Hi Bob,

That's a beautiful shot of the two Whooping Cranes at the Calgary Zoo! You managed to get the colours of the birds just right. Good details too. I was also overcome with excitement when I saw them a couple of days ago at the zoo. I could not capture the pair together, unfortunately, because they were standing too far apart. I posted my best shots of one of them yesterday and the day before.

I assume that you know that Bill Lishman and friends are going to lead some Whooping Cranes from Wisconsin to Florida using ultralight airplanes starting on Sept. 4. They've done that in other years also. The project is called Operation Migration. Some years have been more successful than others in this effort. If you're interested, see my first posting for a link to a YouTube video on Operation Migration. Janice (lovenature) found another link that she provided in her critique of my second posting.

Regards,
John

Hi Bob
one of the negative points here on TN is the fact that it is not mandatory to mention if it is a captive or a wild animal, although it would be so easy to introduce this new category.
I do not have a single zoo picture here on TN but I do not mind having a look at them. Of course taken in captivity the picture must be even better composed as you have plenty of time to do so. The square format and the compo are just perfect here, the light, as you say is very harsh, but still there is no oe anyway on the plumage.
The note is very interesting and thanks again for pointing out this is a zoo picture, e.g. I just see so many falcons and other raptors here from falconry not mentioning that these are captive birds.
