Hi All,
Shot early this year when we met up with Evelynn and Jerry in Waterton, this is my first hummingbird image. I had to wait till one sat still long enough. This is a male Calliope Hummingbird trying to get a female to notice him with his flashy throat plumage. He would fly high into the air hover then drop down to the top of the bushes then up again several times , then he would land and display.

General Description

By Cam Finlay

Calliopes are the smallest hummingbird north of Mexico and tend to breed in the mountains and foothills. They seem to prefer rural areas rather than urban sites. They will come to feeders that are at the edge of communities. Like the Rufous, Calliope first arrives when leaves are just beginning to show in mid to late May in western Alberta. Males appear to remain on territory longer than male Rufous but do leave before the females depart. Both sexes move south through alpine meadows to winter in north west to central Mexico.
Like most hummingbirds, Calliope use nectar and sugar water as energy sources and insects including spiders for protein. When first arriving in spring, they will utilize sapsucker wells, drinking the sap and eating insects that are trapped within. Insect collection is both on the wing and foraging along tree limbs and trunks.
Calliopes nest primarily in the shrub sapling seral stage of 8-15 year old coniferous trees and range into secondary succession following logging or fire. The nest is placed on a limb or conifer cone and often on top of an older nest. Since they often breed in the cool high country, the nest is thick-walled, well insulated and usually placed under an over hanging branch to reduce heat loss. Construction is of moss and shredded bark, lined with plant down and covered with cocoons held together with spider silk. The outside is covered with lichens. Males are polygynous holding feeding/breeding territories but do not participate in nest construction, incubation or care of the young. Females lay two eggs with incubation 15 days. Nestlings fledge at about 20 days of age.

Hello Rick,
Again a very beautiful photo. A jewel against the grey BG. The light on the hummingbird is gorgeous. Great sharpness, choice of composition and POV. Very nice eye contact. An excellent example to show us how tiny this bird is.

How funny...
I have a shot of this hummingbird too... sitting on the exact same twig. This is funny because we weren't there at the same time! I guess he likes that particular spot. Nice capture.

Hi Friend,

Long time no see and I have missed you. Congrats on your first Hummingbird and a very beautiful one. I have not seen a Calliope before. He is posing so nicely - looks a little grumpy probably because the females are ignoring him. Sensational colors, fine details and a superb background. We have had very few hummingbirds this year - maybe they will show up now that it's cooled down a bit.

Jane

Hi Rick,
yes, Humming bird is not easy to catch, it take a lot of luck, unless you have a feeder, which I don't like to see in photo. Love the natural setting and background, you patience paid off. Congrats. Another excellent shot.
