When touring Canada – coming from Calgary, we travelled across the Continental Divide through the Kicking Horse Pass to see Emerald Lake, one of the most admired destinations in Yoho National Park, among the soaring peaks of the Canadian Rockies.

It had been discovered in 1882 by famed mountain guide Tom Wilson, while rounding up a group of horses that had gone astray.

At 1302 m, the vegetation was quite stunning, with some delicate floral displays. The moist, shady enclaves common to the Emerald Lake region make it one of the best places to spot a variety of tiny, fragile wild orchids. I am growing Orchids myself, and I was really looking forward see the YELLOW LADY SLIPPER or SPOTTED ORCHID. However, being on a Guided Tour through the Canadian Rockies, we sadly did not see any.
Neither was there time to hike around the lake and therefore missed the world-famous Burgess Shale fossil beds.
Emerald Lake is a fantastic place to see wildlife, as animals are drawn to the important water source. Bald eagles, moose, and ospreys are a common sight, as are waterfowl such as loons and mergansers.
PHOTO
For once neither the brochures nor the Guide had exaggerated: The color of the water is REALLY EMERALD (not photoshopped!). The tender, brilliant greens of the pine trees reminded us of spring in Scandinavia.

Ingrid,
Indeed an emerald lake. Very nice composition with beautiful colors!
Regards,
Alina

Hi Ingrid,
Except for the OE sky, the view through the trees on the glacier lake is wonderful. Maybe making the photo a little darker might do good to some of the other hot spots.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Ingrid,

The trees are framing well the lake and the mountains. The point of view leads my eyes toward the mountains which is giving depth to the composition. The intensity of the light brings out the colors of the lake. Have a nice day.

Pierre
