Hi All,
For give me for digging into the archives but I need a shot of color as winter has been with us for a week now with cold temperatures and snow. This Blue Jay was captured by Cameron Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park.
Rick

Blue Jay
Cyanocitta cristata
>

General Description

By Nora Bryan

This familiar and cocky little crested Corvid is familiar to everyone, although it is mainly a bird of eastern North America. The Blue Jay has become increasingly common across central Alberta in the last couple of decades.

Blue Jays are birds of mixed woods, but in Alberta are most at home in and around cities and towns. They are most noticeable in winter.

Blue Jays are readily attracted to feeders where they tend to dominate other birds. Whole peanuts are a favorite. Food may be cached for lengthy periods. Like other Corvids, Blue Jays are opportunistic omnivores and won't turn down a feast of other birds' eggs and nestlings if they can get them.

Nests are usually constructed three to ten metres high in conifers. Many crude preliminary twig nests may be built before the pair constructs their breeding nest. This nest is finished with bark shreds and often lined with man-made materials including string, cloth and paper. Four or five eggs are laid. Young are fledged 17 to 19 days after an incubation period of 17 days.

Hi Rick,

You never have to apologize for showing us a Blue Jay. I'm with Nick - I would love to see one some day. I love the pose on the rock and his wonderful face and colors. Lovely setting too. Not even photography weather here. We are at 3700 feet and the snow level may drop to 3500 tonight and tomorrow morning. Nothing like seeing the cacti covered with snow. Only problem is it is gone within minutes.

Jane

Rick,

Is the cold snap getting to you? I am on the receiving end of it and I know you pain - its cold! It sure makes photography a tough propositions as even the birds hunker down and are nowhere in sight.... I don't think you have to feel bad for going through your archives - I don't mind an injection of color at all :)

Best Regards,

Martin

Hi Rick,
Beautiful capture of this blue jay.I liked pose of bird and BG a lot.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the splash of color Rick. It is interesting how quickly we succumb to the harshness and dullness of winter. You'll feel better if and when these storms blow through and you get a bright, blue sky contrasting with winter white. It has been cold and snowy here also... but not nearly as severe as you are experiencing. Driving is hazardous because people aren't used to the conditions and neither are the services. I'm staying home... and trying to catch up on critiques.

This is a nicely composed image. I like the jay perched atop that rock.
