My bird collection got a bit bigger this weekend. While hiking we came across this northern Flicker. First we noticed it when she approached her nest in an old tree trunk, unfortunatly that was to obstructed by leafes and branches to get a good shot (posted a shot of it in the work shop). She has at least two nestlings; I could see their beaks peaking out from the whole. I finally got a half decent shot when the bird left the nest and flew up to a higher branch.

The Northern Flicker is a common species, yet Breeding Bird Survey trends indicate this species’ numbers are declining, particularly the eastern race (known as the Yellow-shafted Flicker). Reasons for this decline are highly speculative. Possibilities include the general maturing and closing of forests in the East and the use of pesticides on lawns and other feeding areas.

Lovely capture.POV,framing,details,BG,lighting and composition are wonderful.Head of bird is a little dark:).Nevertheless great

Hi Sky,
Well spotted and captured. Nicely framed but unfortunately not much of the bird is visible. I don't know if it would have been possible but a shot from the other side might have been better. Not always easy in the wild, and it sounds like it was a nice encounter with this Flicker. Interesting note and workshop, a very good and complete post.

Hi Sky,
I know by experience how difficult it is to capture a bird with a 300 mm zoom in open field. But you have capture the moment it worth a shot! Good compostion and note.

I agree with Adrian, Sky. The bird is not really into picture the way it should have been. The other details are irrelevant.

du sammelst wohl für ein Vogel-Lexikon?
Da hast Du schon jede Menge Material zusammen.
Leider hat hier das Objektiv auch das Maximum erreicht, die perfekte Schärfe kann man nicht immer erwarten wenn das Licht fehlt und die Motive einfach nicht näher kommen wollen.
Trotzdem ein guter Schuß, vielen Dank und Gruß
