After a morning photographing with Jacob and an afternoon hiking for about 5 hours the day ended with a soft colored sunset. Setting up my tripod on the campground pointed toward the spot where the sun would set, I waited for some more evening colors. Soon I noticed that the sky wouldn't receive that much color and I immediately thought that HDR technique would help me get the best tonal range. Using a 3.3ND grad filter, I took 5 photos with an aperture of F6.3 and shutter speeds ranging from 1/5 to 1/100 of a second.

Fo those that are not familiar with HDR, the following is some basic information:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer graphics and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is a set of techniques that allow a far greater dynamic range of exposures (i.e. a large difference between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows.

HDRI was originally developed for use with purely computer-generated images. Later, methods were developed to produce a HDR image from a set of photos taken with a range of exposures. With the rising popularity of digital cameras and easy to use desktop software, the term "HDR" is now popularly used to refer to the process of tone mapping together bracketed exposures of normal digital images, giving the end result a high, often exaggerated dynamic range; however, in this case neither the input nor the output qualify as "true" HDRI.

I used Photomatix for the HDR rendering and tone mapping.

Hello Niek,
Another beautiful landscape shot from you. I really like the cloud following the line of the beautiful tree silhuettes and the sky is really on fire! A fabulous sunset shot!
Many thanks, Ulla

Belle composition bien équilibrée. Les teintes douces conviennent à merveille à ce style de paysage.
Bonne journée.

Hi Niek

What an amazing result!!! Now this is indeed a fantastic and very acurate representation on the lights there!
I guess that this is how it looked with a human eye, too. (because, at lest from my experience, in landscaping one you see and another thing you get from photos).
Anyway, i really like what you manged here and the colors everywhere are simply spectalucar! It's great to see such amazing tones in the sky, such beautiful silhouettes and still retain the nice green color of the grass in the FG.
Is that your tent there? ...and a 205...if i'm not mistaken :)
Anyway, a magnificent post completed by a very suitable and interesting note.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Niek,
Exceptional tonalities with a richly colored foreground and effective use of HDR. Composition is excellent, esp. the disappearing silhouettes.
Best wishes,

Hello Niek,
looks like a great place to pitch a tent.
great shot, the colors in this sunset sky are so beautiful. Good composition, nice horizontal division of your layers and excellent use of space.
Very well done.

Delicioso panorama. Hermosos tonos los de este cielo bien captado para disfrute de todos nosotros...
Una composición acertada y bastante agradable.
Perfecta presentación Niek.
Hasta pronto, JL.

hello niek!
wonderful sunset shot with beautiful colors and great compositon.

Wow! You're getting to be quite an expert at this HDR stuff! I wonder if Photomatix works on Mac. Is is a stand alone or does it work in conjunction with Adobe CS? I am a lowly Photoshop Elements user. :º(

I really like the tonal range The "fire" in the sky is lovely. The green seems just a touch saturated (on my Mac).

Nice work

Wow Niek that is really impressive. I haven't tried HDR yet as I always felt that the results seemed unreal but certainly not here. The result looks nature and just beautiful. The sky looks so dramatic

Hi Niek,
let us sit down there around a fire, with a guitar and good songs - and watch that wonderful sky. I love it, such a perfect moment, thanks and greetings

Great shot with some wonderful details and excellent colours. Great composition with the trees so nicely placed.... (I read the note about tent and car, so won't go there).

I still have some shots from February which I might try the HDR on... how do you find the software? So far my attempts with it have not been sucessful...

Hello Niek,
Beautiful colours, the fine tres are the topping!
The sky is very attractive, excellent textures and moody colours...
Well composed as always!

Hello Niek,
Interesting light which you managed well with HDR technique, of which I didn't know about. The composition of the picture is good too. I would just have avoided the car in the background.
Best regards

Wonderful light range here -- it really shows off the HDR stuff. I think I especially see it in the combination of colors and blacks. Without the HDR I think you'd see colors and greys or blacks and soft colors. But here we get real black and rich colors! Well done!

Hi Niek ,
excellent work.
amazing colours. i like this composition.
this is wonderful shot. i like it.
thanks for sharing my friend

Hello Niek,

well this is certainly very impressive. A fine example in composition indeed, and the HDR technique you talk off is very interesting and seems to work well if this is anything to go by. The tent and car are an unfortunate part of the shot, but do not detract too much from an image that is overall very pretty and a pleasure to view. Excellent work,

Thanks for explaining the HDR technique, Niek. It is very educative. All you need is ND grad filter, right?
The end product of your experimentation is a very beautiful evening time landscape. The sky looks very vital with various layers of colours. The grass in the foreground looks richly green and the darker areas including the sihouettes of trees create wonderful contrasts with the foreground and the background.
All in all, a very attractive landscape presentation.

Hi Niek.
I love the way you've kept the grass colour and detail in the foreground while still getting beautiful detail and colour in the sky. Lovely composition. Well done.
Regards, Steve.

Hello Niek,
This is so beautiful. What kind of car are you driving? ...just kidding... :) I like those colors a lot, composition and exposure. As usual, this is a very nice scenery with fine colors and details. Thanks,

I've been curious about using HDR myself Niek and this type of shot makes me want to look further into it! I think here though some cropping of the top of the sky might be good as the top portion of the sky with what looks to be a contrail almost takes away from the rest of this image.

spendide ce paysage de soirée, les couleurs sont parfaites, ceci est un bon travail

Hi Niek,
Color tones, composition and exposure handling is very good. I liked the view. Nice work! TFS

Hello Niek!
I love this soft sunset, I can almost feel how peaceful it must have been to sit and watch it. The dark trees in the photo just add to its beauty. Nice work . TFS

Thanks for your comments on my photo " Morning Relections (20)" :o)

Hi Niek, Very nice capture. The composition is arranged perfectly with the incidental light which gives relief to the foreground. warm tones in the sky are beautiful. Well done.

Groeten, Jacob
