The family Tettigoniidae, known in American English as katydids and in British English as bush-crickets, contains more than 6,800 species. It is part of the suborder Ensifera and the only family in the superfamily Tettigonoidea. They are also known as long-horned grasshoppers, although they are more closely related to crickets than to grasshoppers.

Tettigoniids may be distinguished from grasshoppers by the length of their antennae, which may exceed their own body length, while in grasshoppers are always relatively short.

The name "katydid" comes from the sound produced by species of the North American genus Pterophylla (literally "winged leaf"). The males of katydids have sound-producing organs (via stridulation) located on the hind angles of their front wings, which in some species produce a sound thought to resemble the words "Katy did, Katy didn't", hence the name. In some species females are also capable of stridulation.

There are about 255 species in North America, but the majority of species live in the tropical regions of the world.

The diet of tettigoniids includes leaves, flowers, bark, and seeds, but many species are exclusively predatory, feeding on other insects, snails or even small vertebrates such as snakes and lizards. Some are also considered pests by commercial crop growers and are sprayed to limit growth.

The spikeheaded katydid is somewhat notorious for its plantlike appearance, which allows it to blend in with the vegetation on which it lives, and the spikes discourage potential predators.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Orthoptera
Suborder: Ensifera
Superfamily: Tettigonioidea
Family: Tettigoniidae (Krauss, 1902)

Hello Sumon,
This is such an original picture! I love the way you composed it, those great details, excellent exposure those nice elements as the water droplets. This composition is original and unusual and there is a nice movement in it. This is very well done! Thanks,
Claudine

Another fabulously composed shot with the sharp edge of the leaf and the great division of the page. The droplets look wonderful and the Katydid - green on green - nonetheless shows up splendidly!

Hola Sumon,
bella macro,
perfectos detalles y ecelente nitide y colores...
saludos

Hello Sumon,
This long leg and long antennae Katydid is difficult to have them all in the frame. You did well in capturing the whole Katydid in this small frame. Sharp and crisp clear image. Colors are vivid. Very well done.

Hi Sumon,

This is beautiful! The green on green really works well and the water droplets are a bonus. The Katydid is in an excellent position and all the details are crystal clear. Love how the antennae frame the side of the picture. Exellent composition.

Hello Sumon,
Wonderful macro.Well caught, framed and composed.I liked clear details, sharpness and lighting also a lot.
TFS..:-)

Pressing F11 key is a must to admire this Katydid you have presented here in this picture in its full glory, Sumon.
This is once again a superb image that must be included in my favorites :-).
What sharp focus, what lovely green colours on both the insect and the leaf and what razor-sharp details! And those water drops on the leaf add magic to the picture.
Some people might feel unhappy about the close crop on the antennae side of the insect, but that is okay with me.
I also enjoyed your note on the insect. I have a not-all-that-good picture of a long-legged and long-antennaed insect shot in India, which could perhaps be closer to this species. I would upload it someday to satisfy my curiosity about its ID. It has green, white and maroon colours on its limbs unlike the fully green colour your Katydid has.
Best regards.

Hello Sumon,
Very fine macro of a Cricket nymph, that looks like the European Spotted Bush Cricket, but it may also be a separate different Indian species. Fine composition showing the camouflage potential of these insects.
TFs and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Sumon

Perfection. The DOF and POV are superb.Excellent lighting, focus and sharpness. The colours and contrast are wonderful. The image is high quality ,like being there.TFS

Rob

Hello Sumon!
Very good DOF and interesting POV has this photo. I like details very much (every single water dot is perfectly seen!). Colours are well saturated and the note is very informative. But I am not so sure if this species does not belongs to family Tettigoniidae. Please note that it lives on the tree (or bush). I belive that Michal (cedryk) would be able to say something more about this interesting insect.
But summarizing, I really like this presentation :)
Have a nice day and best greetings,
Radomir
