2nd image from my visit to Pensthorpe Wildlife Park , another of their amazing Crane collection this time one from the other side of the pond in the USA the Sandhill Crane(Grus canadensis) probably one of the better known cranes because the main species is not as endangered as the other species in fact it is still allowed to be hunted in the "Correct" season, though there are a couple of subspecies that are more localised like those on the Island of Cuba and florida and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane (G. c. pulla) classed as Endangered do not need to migrate as they live in warmer clims to start with.
The Sandhill Crane is a bird of marshlands prefering to breed in swamps but where their are larger numbers they will nest on solid gound near to water.Food is very varied frogs , fish and insects, small mammals, but also water vegitation and seeds form part of the diet. Most populations are migatory to warmer parts for the winter, and they travel in family parties of the two parents who mate and stay together for life which in the wild can be 25years and the present years youngsters , this way the youngsters learn the routes to the wintering grounds far away. Though it can be upto 7 years before the young ones find them selves a mate.

Hello Robert,
Very nice bird portrait in wich I like the feather details and color contrast between the red color on the head of the crane and pleasing soft green color tones in the background very much.
Exposure is spot on and composition very good.
Would love to have seen a little more color saturation, sharpness and contrast though.
Nevertheless wonderful shot.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards,
Harry

Hi Robert,
perfectly clear image, excellently composed. Delightfully subtle colour contrasts of grey and red against an almost uniformly mossy green background make the image look very artistic.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Hi Robert,
As portrait fan, I like very much this one!
It's so good the colours got here: the orange of the eye, so close to the red at the top of the head, what a combination!
I like also the tension showed on that turned neck for the pose.
Well done and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Good close up Rob. The light is nice and flat keeping the tones in order. Like the detail in the red cap. Best, Brat.

Very beautiful shot Rob. Until I saw this shot of yours I didn't know there was a hole through the top of their beak. Your detail and colour are excellent, the composition works well too. Love that eye. Very nice.

Thanks, John

Buen retrato y excelente composición. También me gusta el enfoque y pueden apreciarse sin dificultad detalles tan interesantes como ese curioso pico. Fondo ideal para el rojo de la cabeza.
Saludos Robert.

Hello Rob

Striking image. The red “beret” it is wearing stands out well on the thumbnail.
Is it a Jewish bird.( Ha- ha) it looks like those little doily’s they have on their heads.

I can see right through it’s beak, and I notice a small piece of green of the background. Thank you for sharing this photo with us. Very good portrait. I like the workshop Harry has done.
Warmest regards
Aaltjie

Yep, a great portrait Rob.
Good exposure and nice subtle colours.
Great post.
Cheers, Steve

They do make nice portraits for sure.
Seems a bit different that the ones here on colours.
A bit of contrast would bring the red top out nice.
Best to you. D
