This Western Fence Lizard, or Sceloporus occidentalis, is also known as Blue-bellied or Swift. Upper portions of the lizard range in color from light gray to black, with alternating areas of black, gray and a lighter yellow to buff color. It can get upwards of six inches, or 15 cm in length.

Males of this species have a more prominent blue coloration on their lower flanks and necks. Small areas of blue specks can extend to their upper sides. Their blue undersides are generally flashed in a territorial display.

The lizard is normally seen sunning on high spots where they can watch for food and predators. They are prey for snakes and hawks. Kingsnakes and Striped Racers are particularly fond of fence lizards.

It is found in throughout California, eastern and southwest Oregon, southwest Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, western Utah, and northwestern Baja California.
