This Blue Grouse was captured in the Blakiston Creek Valley in Waterton Lakes National Park this summer.

Blue Grouse
Dendragapus obscurus
Also known as - Dusky Grouse.

General Description

By Gustave J. Yaki

Blue Grouse breed from Yukon south along the coast into California and in the mountains into Arizona and New Mexico. In Alberta, it occurs in the southwestern part, along the foothills country. The population in Alberta was once considered a separate species, known as the Dusky Grouse.

The Blue Grouse is widespread but is becoming scarcer in the higher foothills and mountains. They are resident in Kananaskis Country. Unlike most species, they move to higher elevations in winter, becoming more arboreal then.

They feed on leaves, mainly coniferous needles, but also add flowers, fruit, seeds and insects.

Males are polygamous. The nest, often near the forest-edge, well-concealed under low branches, near or under logs or tree roots, is a dry depression lined with nearby vegetation. The six to eight eggs are incubated for about 26 days. The precocial young are led from the nest to the feeding areas as soon as their down is dry. The young are able to flutter some distance at 6-7 days. They have developed their back feathers by 8-10 days and no longer need to be brooded. Families disperse in late summer.

Great natural setting with it's mix of wild plants, framing your grouse well Rick.
Very good color, exposure, and details..
Nice heads-up pose too :)

It's pretty big looking from the picture Rick. If I saw them on the Mendo Coast when we lived there..I might have mistaken it for a baby pheasant or something with my early Ohio upbringing......I was using my search engine4 to look up other images of this bird and it seems you have it a bit better than some which almost try to do some PP technique to add an artificial blue. The true blues of this bird are subtle....and this is a true representation of what I fell it should look lie..Nice job! You really are a naturalist at heart...Might be nice to meet some day...we are so close..
