Orchidaceae, also called the Orchid family, is the largest family of the flowering plants (Angiospermae). Its name is derived from the genus Orchis.

The Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew list 880 genera and nearly 22,000 accepted species, but the exact number is unknown (because of taxonomic disputes). The number of orchid species equals about four times the number of mammal species, or more than twice the number of bird species. It also encompasses about 6–11% of all seed plants. About 800 new orchid species are added each year.
Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species in the 19th century, horticulturists have more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars.

Hello Elizabeth! Welcome to TN! Also perfect macro capture of this beautiful orchid with excellent DOF, POV and composition. TFS.

Hi Elizabeth

That's a stunning flower you have captured - good exposure and detail. Pity the 'tongue' is a little unfocussed but that's the problem when taking close ups of some orchids, as they are very three dimensional. TFS.

Hi Elizaeth, a great picture of a great flower, amazing isn't it? I am fascinated, like most people, by the beau and the perfect mimetism of these plants. You captured it very well and accompany the picture with short and instructive notes. Thank you!
