Hope I got the ID correct on this one, there are quite a few species of Hoverfly that look similar to this,I have another shot from above and it looks like Eristalis pertinax to me,after checking various sites for info.

Eristalis pertinax is one of the larger hoverflies (family Syrphidae)and is the one that closely resembles the honey bee,not only in appearance but also in its behaviour as it visits flowers. However as a true fly it has just a single pair of wings, the hind wings having been modified into the tiny,drumstick-like halteres, which provide balance in flight. The males commonly hover in woodland clearings, aggressively defending small territories.
E.pertinax is a common species though it can be confused with the Drone Fly (E.tenax).The latter has a broader facial stripe between the eyes and little or no yellow on the legs-specifically the tibiae of the hind legs are dark in E.tenax wheras they are distinctly bicoloured in E.pertinax.

The shot was taken by the side of a moorland ditch where it was feeding on thistle.

photo cropped and sharpened USM 45 %
I tried but failed cloning out the reeds in the background which were flattened after the heavy rains we had a couple of weeks ago.Hopefully they arent too distracting.

Une belle Eristale sur une fleur de Cirse, jolie photo aux couleurs agréables et bien nette.
Well done !

very nice andy the thistle is a little over exposed, but it is very difficult with such a dark subject to get spot on, and there is no total white outs so its only a very minnor nit especially when the rest is so well seen, Good DOF for the subjects all sharp against the blurred BG.

Nice shot Andy, good dof and colours.

Andy, Good sharpness & detail. As Robert mentioned a bit overexposed. Just learning myself but I believe the trick is knowing when to manually set your EV and override the cameras auto setting. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I understand you bump up the value of whatever the camera reads under these conditions?? Say +1 ? Also PDP (next page) consistently uses a Hoya filter that seems to help alot with the "blues".

Nice work Andy, I appreciate how hard these beasts are to ID. Lovely detailed shot, especailly the wings. Very good work and good note.

Very good one, Andy. The diagonal appearance of the thistle makes for a nice compositional device, and the hoverfly on top of it is captured in wonderful detail and sharpness. I particularly like the texture of the wings, and the beauty of the overall color setting. Really nice shot.

Andy
Nice compo on this fly, also his lilac perch forms a lovely contrast with his yellow-brown body.

Lovely detailed shot. Excellent work on the ID. I still can't get them appart. Fine detail with a nice supporting note. Great one Andy.

Very good close up, Andy. The details are very sharp, especially on the transparent wings. I like it. Well done.
