Excellent work Gert!! It seems you've taken full advantage of the temps to get up close and personel with this dragon!! I think sometimes it's better to shoot in overcast conditions with stationary subjects as it removes all the hard light? This has superb sharpness and details. I don't think I've ever seen the eye segments so sharp and clear before..The wet look adds greatly..Very well done and congratulations my friend!!

I saw this as you posted it gert, it is a superb image for your 300th, it is probably the best head on macro of a dragonfly yet posted to TN, the details are so clear even for such a dull day. I presume being so cooled down with the damp it was vey coperative with you ;0)).
I just love the dew drops on its face adds a nice extra.
As to ident, well I think having checked with the books either Sym. fonscolombii (Red-viened darter), the most likely is Sym flaveolum (Yellow winged darter), I base this on the amount of black between the eyes and the Fons, every species is different and it makes for a good ident point if you can get this close or find dead one, to make the ident certain need to see the wings to see the veining and colouring there. in red veined tthe leading edge ones are a reddy orange and in the yellow winged the hind wing has large areas close to the body are stained yellow.

This is incredible, Gert! What a sharp and clean image, it's really fantastic. The water drop is the cherry on the cake here, the cake being a real professional work. So, you've got everything here. Overcast sky and low light are doing very well to even the exposure and show a very homogene image. Hat's off my friend!

I am spellbound by this Gert. I am not stirred by soft focus macros they have to be sharp were it matters and this is certainly tack sharp and incredibly close. Its macro captures like this that makes me want a Big Sigma 150. Very impressive work.

Hi Gert, congratulations on your 300th post. This picture is superb. The details are incredible, beautifully managed.

The frons markings resemble a Ruddy Darter Sympetrum snaguineium and the colouration suggests female or a teneral. But the thoraic markings (rule out S. flaveolum) and the thorax coupled with the frons (and WS) suggests it is a teneral male S. vulgatum - Vagrant Darter (widespread and common in NE Europe). From the WS there are stripes on the legs that would fit. I'm not 100% though.

Very well done and here's looking forward to 300 more!

I agree with Rob that this is probably the best set of df eyes yet shown here, the detail is astounding.
I shalln't hazard a guess as to ID, with one as young as this I always find it hard to be certain.

Incredible macro, I would love to be able to do that, but my camera doesn't get closer than 5cm and I don't think they sell a macro adaptor.

This is probably my favourite photo I've seen on this site so far. I particularly like that you've tilted the camera so that the nose of the dragonfly is on the same focal plane as the eyes, thus ensuring that this is in focus and not distracting.

Fantastic Mega Macro!
Very sharp and detailed shot.
It is lie a Electron Microscopy image. Very larger than what I have seen with routine stereo loop microscope!.

WOW!!! What an incredible picture!!! Wait a minute, I have to find my jaw which felt on the ground... .... Ok! I'm back :-) Even if perfection cannot be reached, your picture cannot be closer to it!!! Look at those eyes! Incredible! I like also the water drop on the left side of its mouth. Colors are wonderful and the POV cannot be better! Details are awesome!!! You got the time to install the tripod and do all the manipulations before having her flying away!!! Great capture and TFS... This one will go right to my favorites!!!

That is a fantastic shot! Before I thought that only a scanning microscopy has a chance to show all of 'features' of lovely flies which should be...killed (or sorry, fixed, of course!) for such a 'science'! But your happy shot cleaned out all my previous delusions! Once again - congratulations!
