Gasteruption assectator

When I first caught sight of this tiny wasp (11 mm) last summer I thought it was a mosquito!! It was only about 11 mm in length and it is the only time I’ve seen it. Gasteruption jaculator that is bigger is on the other hand quite common here.

It is a peculiar looking wasp with a unique long neck and an abdomen that is attached high up on the back of the thorax. The female has a long ovipositor. She lays her eggs on fully grown larvae of solitary bees. Hence the English name Bee Wasp.

In Sweden there are only six species of Gasteruptionidae while in Europe there are about 30 known species. The flower it is resting on is a Yarrow (Achillea millefolium).

Hi Ulla. An unusual looking Wasp with its long neck . You were able to get a fine close up of this with you canon. Taken with good detai land natural colours. It seems ti be enjoying the small flower heads. Well taken TFs.
Nick..

A fine reproduction of that tiny wasp Ulla, an astonishingly sharp image for that f/3.5 my friend, with a great amount of detail, both of the wasp and of the cute little flowers. TFS indeed!

hello Ulla!
a white carpet for this strange wasp, that also i have photographed
good details despite a difficult manage of light

greetings sERGIO

Hi Ulla,
Getting a picture of a dark subject with so much of while around is always a challenge and i like your picture for that, The details are perfect , so is the position of the insect in the frame. There is a bit of noise all around, that can easily be removed using a good PP.

Hello Ulla,
This wasp has indeed a very special look with its elongated abdomen. Looking at the size, it's really tiny and we can see its shape probably a lot better on your picture than in reality (I need anyway glasses to see tiny things..) The Achillea flower looks also very beautiful magnified like this. Very interesting posting.
Thanks a lot and kind regards
Anne

I had not heard of such a thing! A nice surprise for you and for me as well. You certainly had some difficult light which you managed to deal with fine. Considering that lens and camera combo...together as one I think...it is pushing the limits with such good luck!

The macro work is very well done considering the size of the little creature...

Hi Ulla,
amazing what you can do with f/3.5 and 1/500. The interesting wasp is well presented, even the flower background is sharp. You dealt with the white flower color very well . There is a slight grain that may have as its cause the sensor of the bridge camera.
Best regards
Dietrich
