Great Spotted Woodpecker-Dendrocopos major

Now it’s time to feed the birds here as it’s quickly getting colder with frost at night. So far the most frequent visitors at the bird table have been Tree Sparrows, Great Tits and Blue Tits. The odd Wren and Robin has also turned up but today a special guest arrived! I’m not too keen on showing birds on garden feeders but this one is not exactly a common visitor to our garden so here we go!

"The Great Spotted Woodpecker is 23-26 cm long, with a 38-44 cm wingspan. The upperparts are glossy black, with white on the sides of the face and neck. A black line zigzags from the shoulder halfway across the breast (in some subspecies nearly meeting in the center), then back to the nape; a black stripe, extending from the bill, runs below the eye to meet this latter part of the zigzag line. On the shoulder is a large white patch and the flight feathers are barred with black and white. The three outer tail feathers are barred; these show when the short stiff tail is outspread, acting as a support in climbing. The underparts are dull white, the abdomen and undertail coverts crimson. The bill is slate black and the legs greenish grey.
Males have a crimson spot on the nape, which is absent in females and juvenile birds. In the latter, the top of the head is crimson between the bill and the center of the crown instead.
Despite its contrasting plumage, the Great Spotted Woodpecker is often an inconspicuous bird. The large white shoulder patch is the feature that most easily catches the eye. When hidden by the foliage, its presence is often advertised by the mechanical drumming, a vibrating rattle, produced by the rapidly repeated blows of strong bill upon a trunk or branch. This is not a dedicated courtship call or challenge, but a signal of either sex to announce its presence. It is audible from a great distance, depending on the wind and the condition of the wood, a hollow bough naturally producing a louder note than living wood. The call is a sharp quet, quet." Hej Ulla,

Seems like I use exactly the same brand of food as you do, but I never get visitors like this guy hehehe!
No frankly, there are many other birds around but they never touch the stuff except the blue and great tits...
This is a fine capture, with great colours & details in the plumage, nicely blurred back!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Ulla,
haha, I also have such a woodpecker in my garden in winter - I had to laugh when I first saw him hanging at the food-ball for the tits ;-) But in sweden it is also usual to do that, lovely.
Your shot is very pretty, thanks.
If you like to see mine please klick here.
But yours is much more better.
Bye and greetings

Hello Ulla,
Here, in Holland, it is a bit too early to feed the birds. It's not cold enough and they still can find there own feed.
Very beautiful photo of this Great Spotted Woodpecker. Fantastic natural colours and excellent sharp details. Good pose, OOF BG and composition.
Have a very nice weekend,
Peter

Hi Ulla!

It's always a pleasure to discover a rare species. Indeed, this species of the Woodpecker probably is not only rare at your home, but also on TN. I appreciate this picture very much. The particular position of the bird reveals its characteristics very well.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Ulla.
How I wish to take so nice shot of the species. I often see it in-flight and have only few bad shots taken from far distance. Yours is very nice. Especially I like attractive BG (it is nicely blurred and coloured. Red spots are looked perfectly). Pose of the bird as well as a composition of the shot are very nice too. Details are perfect and reproduction of the feather colouration is very exact. Have a good weekend and TFS.
