I was in luck today to be able to shoot this Common Mormon and that too when it is still cold in northern India. The afternoon sun was fairly warm and I was hoping to catch some insects in the house gardens. After a few unsuccessful attempts to shoot a Hummingbird Moth, I was about to call it a day when suddenly this rather big swallowtail butterfly landed on a marigold flower right under my nose. It is a restless creature and never stops fluttering its wings. Anyway, it stayed around for a minute or so and gave me the opportunity to shoot it. Out of some 8 or so shots, I decided to post this one because I was able to capture it with its wings open for a split second. Hope you like it.

The Common Mormon (Papilio polytes) is a common species of swallowtail butterfly widely distributed across Asia. This butterfly is known for the mimicry displayed by the numerous forms of its females which mimic inedible Red-bodied Swallowtails such as the Common Rose and the Crimson Rose.

Range

Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, southern and western China (including Hainan (Guangdong province), Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan (Ryukyu Islands), Vietnam, Laos, Kampuchea, Andamans, Nicobars, Eastern and Peninsular Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia (except Moluccas and Irian Jaya), Philippines, and Northern Marianas (Saipan).

Description

Jet black butterfly with row of white spots along the middle part of hindwing. 90–100 mm.

Hello Ram!
Great shot of Common Mormon. Despite the white color being a little over-exposed, butterfly has great details and black is in perfect balance. Background as well as yellow flowers it is sitting on are very beautiful. Nice POV and a pleasant diagonal framing,

Hello Ram,
It seems patience paid off nicely for you with the capture of this beautiful Common Mormon butterfly. Your 1/1000 shutter speed has frozen it's fluttering wings perfectly. Very attractive markings and well saturated colors.
I have noticed in other photos that some specimens have very little of the tiny golden colored flakes in their forewings while others like this one seem to be covered, is this an indication of the butterflies age? Great shot!!
Ron
