A very damaged specimen that made me run for an hour before being able to photograph it, I had not seen it for 2 years in my fields.

VANESSA CARDUI
The Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) is a well-known colourful butterfly, sometimes known in North America as the Cosmopolitan. It is one of the most widespread of all butterflies, found on every continent except Antarctica. In Australia, V. cardui has a limited range around Bunbury, Fremantle and Rottnest Island. However, its close relative, the Australian Painted Lady (Vanessa kershawi, sometimes considered a subspecies) ranges over half the continent. Other closely related species are the American Painted Lady (Vanessa virginiensis), and the West Coast Lady (Vanessa annabella). The Painted Lady occurs in any temperate zone, including mountains in the tropics. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates in spring, and sometimes again in autumn. For example, it migrates from North Africa and the Mediterranean to Britain in May and June, but offspring produced there die in the Autumn.Painted Lady butterflies are popular for many pre-school and kindergarten classes to raise in schools to demonstrate the life cycle of a butterfly. Painted ladies are very popular with children. They are used in many science fair projects. Several insect distribution companies such as Insect Lore include Painted Lady caterpillars in their catalogue of live insects for ordering. The egg takes 3 to 5 days to hatch. The caterpillar takes 7-11 days to turn into a chrysalis. It takes 7-11 days for the chrysalis to turn into a butterfly. It doesn't stay in one area so long. The painted lady butterfly moves 1000 miles in its life. Its wing span is 2 in. The painted lady caterpillar is black with spiked skin. The caterpillars feed on a wide variety of host plants of the families Asteraceae, especially Carduus crispus (as implied by the species name cardui Latin for "of the thistles"). Also, Boraginaceae, Malvaceae (especially hollyhocks and dwarf mallow Malva neglecta), and a number of Fabaceae are eaten. The adults drink nectar from a variety of wildflowers and cultivars, more commonly the favored thistle, butterfly bush (Buddleja), asters, Tickseed sunflowers (Bidens) and zinnias.

VANESSA CARDUI

Not a pretty sight, this Painted Lady, Luciano. However, your picture of it is excellent. The head and front parts in general are in sharp focus.

Hello Luciano,
At least you captured this butterfly, spending an hour 🙂
Beautiful coloured butterfly, indeed. Quite well captured. Butterfly looks good, but background doesn't look perfect for such macro photography, due to the distance between subject and those grass blades. So in my personal opinion, either I'll not post this picture (because you have already posted this species in your gallery) or I would like to retouch it to get rid of those unwanted distracting grass blades.
I have done a WS for you. Not perfect due to low resolution images. You'll get good result if you use your original image.
Just ignore it if you don't like.
Thanks for sharing,
Regards and have a nice Sunday,
Srikumar

Hello Luciano,
Indeed if the species is missing so long it is understandable why you photographed this damaged specimen.
In the area where I live I find the species quite often....
This species is so beautiful that it deserves to be posted as often as possible.
Marius.

Hi Luciano,
fortunately I hold you in very high esteem so I checked this picture despite the visible damage on the butterfly. I was rewarded by the great note of yours !!! You look at this picture with more respect after reading it. Thanks, my TN friend. Have a good week, Dietrich

Bonjour Luciano,

La végétation cadre bien l'insecte. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails du papillon Belle-Dame. La lumière met en valeur la beauté des couleurs. Bonne journée.

Hi Luciano
This specimen is already a veteran, but still beautiful.
Dof, sharpness and exposure are good.

Tfs

Ciao Luciano, nonostante abbia perso un po' di pezzi sembra ancora abbastanza fresca, bei colori brillanti e ottima nitidezza, bravissimo, ciao Silvio
