Juncos are one of the most common winter visitors to bird feeders and fun to watch because of their interesting social behavior.

The flock has a social hierarchy with a pecking order in which males dominate females and adults dominate younger birds. Dominant birds will face another bird and raise and fan their tails revealing the white outer tail feathers. They may also rush at and peck or chase subordinate birds. Sometimes two dominant birds may face one another, extend their necks, and repeatedly raise and lower their bills as if in a little “dance.” Rarely will this end in a fight.

Although this shot was taken at ISO 100, S 1/1000, F/5 I am shocked by the amount of noise that showed up in the wings. I tried to remove some of it with Neat Image but was not happy with the results. Because I thought that this picture managed to convey the behaviour of the juncos at the feeder, I decided to post it anyway. What do you think? Time to invest in a DSLR?

Hello Daniel!

Very interesting and well captured moment.

I very much like the details in the splayed feathers, and wonderful eye contact that you have managed between these two.

Sharpness, POV, lighting and pose are exceptional.

What noise?????

Well done on this fine posting, thank you.

As for DSLR .... just imagine :-)

Hi Daniel
Well captured scene which really shows them communicating. Good lighting and framing. I don't see that much noise.
Well done.
Toni

You captured the moment beautifully. The noise is only in the shadows so its not much visible. Hmmm did you use a flash? I can see the wing shadow on the wall. Another argument in favor of getting a DSLR - shooting this sequence in motor drive :) Thanks for sharing!
