An attempt at a rather common bird. The chaffinch. The problem is the chaffinches in my garden are very timid and it has taken some doing in trying to get this picture.

I'm not 100% happy with it. I think it should be brighter, but when I up the brightness I end up wih an overexposed white patch on the wing, which is probably worse than it being a bit on the dull side.

From RSPB...

Chaffinch
Fringilla coelebs
The chaffinch is the UK’s second commonest breeding bird, and is arguably the most colourful of the UK's finches. Its patterned plumage helps it to blend in when feeding on the ground and it becomes most obvious when it flies, revealing a flash of white on the wings and white outer tail feathers. It does not feed openly on bird feeders - it prefers to hop about under the bird table or under the hedge. You’ll usually hear chaffinches before you see them, with their loud song and varied calls.

Where does it live?
Breeding
Anywhere with trees and bushes, including coniferous and deciduous woodland, farmland hedgerows, parks and rural and suburban gardens.
Wintering
Same as breeding habitat.
Where to see it
Around the UK in woodlands, hedgerows, fields, parks and gardens anywhere.
What does it eat?
Insects and seeds.
What does it sound like?
Fast, descending song phrase; 'pink, pink' calls.
When to see it
All year round.

Taken in RAW, converted tp jpeg, cropped resize and sharpen...

Hopefully the bird pictures are improving...

Hi Emma,
A very natural looking shot, I think it's a little soft on the detail but I don't think the brightness is a problem, actually I like the soft light in this. Colours are good too, a very nice shot.
Regards,
Adrian

Hi Emma,
I think the light is just fine.
The colors are rich and wonderful.
Great POV and DOF.
What is wonderful about TN is that these chaffinches might be "common" in your corner of the world, they are not in mine.
So thank you for sharing a beautiful "exotic" bird with me. : )

Hello Emma , A Very good picture from the bird , a beauty background colours compositie light in his eyes and sharp ,
nice framing ,Greetings Teunie .

Hi Emma, grat capture!
Maurizio

Very sharp Image.
Real colors and good composition.

Andrea

Very good colours and very good pose of this little bird, until now I didn't succeed to catch a descent picture of this bird.
There is a little problem of sharpness in this picture, some details are 'gone', I would suggest that you won't go down from F8.0 in this lens, you will get better results, for this you can use higher ISO then 100.

Excellent shot Emma.
The chaffinch looks superb and the background is great.
It is a very good composition and the colora and the details are great.
Good POV and DOF.

i´ve been trying this bird for the last
couple weeks, too, but did not do so well yet.
the details and colors are very good,
but somehow the featherstructure looks blurred.
pov & composition are very nice,
the branches with the buds add very well.
good job & take care, thor.

Hi Emma

This is a lovely shot of the Chaffinch. You have composed it well. Nice catchlight in the eye to bring it to life. Good depth of colour too. Nice work. :-)

Well taken, nice exposure and color.

Greg

Hi Emma, a beautiful Chaffinch. The composition and POV are very good. A little soft, but you are improving. Better than the birds that I take. Lovely colours and good details.
Very well done, Janice

I think your chaffinch is exposed perfect, its easy to get too picky with your own pictures. Try shooting at 800ISO and then use RawShooter (free to download of the web) to get rid of the noise. You'll find this gives you a lot better depth of field which helps when the bird is facing you. Matt.
