Firstly, thanks Thor (Thor68) for the correct ID: Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus).

Taken at the Wetlands Trust, Arundel. I was sat on the path photographing this fellow when Mark (MojoUK - thanks Mark :-)) kindly let me know that a very large Swan had taken a liking to me and was getting very close :-) From the basic exif below you can see how low the light was that day.

Post processing minimal, just levels and sharpen.

1/125 - f/4.5 - ISO 400 - exposure bias -0.67 - 500mm - no flash - Monopod.

The pheasant was introduced to Britain by the Romans and Normans. Further introductions of various races (or 'subspecies') have been made since, and it is now our most common gamebird. As the different races have since interbred, adult plumage is extremely variable. Adult males are attractive and unmistakable, with a long tail, bright red wattles around the eyes, a chestnut coloured body, and an iridescent green or bluish head, which is often separated from the body by a white collar. Females are paler in colour, with spots and streaks, which provide good camouflage.

The Pheasant is only protected in the ‘close season’, at any other time it is ‘ok’ to shoot them. More evidence that as a race we are not quite as civilised as we would like to believe.

Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Chordata
Class Aves
Order Galliformes
Family Phasianidae
Genus Phasianus

Size Male length: 70-90 cm (of which the tail is 35-45 cm)
Female length: 55-70 cm (of which the tail is 20-25 cm)

Hi Adrian,
you have captured the iridescence of the feathers nicely; clarity of detail is outstanding and DoF is just right, very nicely taken image.

Regards
Terry.

Excellent details and vibrant colors, nice portrait of this pheasant, congratulations!

Imam

Hi Adrian,
Excellent exposure under low-light conditions. Very nice color and well saturated, I think the absence of flash helped the color here. Very sharp and detailed, excellent eye contact and framing in your portrait also..
Very well done and Thank You!

Beautiful shot, Adrian. Excellent sharpness in feather detail. Even on a monopod it's still a heavy lens at 1/125 and 750mm (I'm guessing). Good framing and beautiful colors. It's a pity such a pretty bird is called "common"? But, isn't a picture worth a thousand words, after all?
Regards,
Mark

Hi Adrian,

Wow, quite simply breath taking my friend. You have caught the colours of this birds magnificent plumage excellently. Composition, focus, DOF and POV are all spot on. You did a great job of holding that beast of a lens steady at that shutter speed.

Regards, Mark

wow, this is wonderful, adrian! :-)
the colors and details are absolutely awesome.
it starts at the yellow eye, the red around it
and goes over to the blue and purple feathers
of the head. you can see the white ring on the
neck - that´s why it´s called a Ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus).
a truly beautiful and amazing shot.
thanks & take care, thor.

What a colourful bird!!Fantastic portrait !!!TFS!

Truly remarkable image, Adrian!
It is rarely that we see a bird of such exquisite beauty.
The image is perfect from every point of view -- focus, colours, shapness, details. The simple white frame highlights the colours very well.
It would be a crime to kill such a beautiful bird. Haven't we done enough damage already?
Thanks for sharing this lovely image.

Hi Adrian
Crazy me. Earlier this morning, I did a critique on this photo, but something must have caused me to exit it without updating the critique. At that stage it was still a Common pheasant, but I see it has mutated since and became a Ring-necked pheasant (chuckle). Thanks to Thorsten I don't have to point you to the correct ID anymore. To my utter surprise I've discovered a snow-white critique box, just now, when I came to have another look at it. Ha-ha-ha, maybe it has something to do with age.
This is one fine bird and you have captured him beautifully in all his glory. The rainbow of colours and hues reflected by the feathers are just remarkable. The details are ever so sharp and that clear yellow eye has photogenic magic locked up in it. The composition and BG is absolutely great and the exposure was spot-on.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot
