I found this beautiful butterfly on a cabbage, in my garden, just some minutes before it started raining. He was sitting on the cabbage with the wings wide open, without moving at all, so it was easy for me to take some photos. On sunny days he usually sits on a tree, along with lots of flies and some big hornets. It was the first time I saw him leave this tree. I wonder what happened to his poor wings...

Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)

Class : Insecta
Order : Lepidoptera
Family : Nymphalidae

European/world range : From North America across central and southern Europe and Asia to Iran, and Africa north of the Sahara. In western Europe it is a widespread and sometimes common resident from the Mediterranean north at least to central Germany where it overwinters in most years.

Foodplants : The most important and widely available larval foodplant is Common Nettle (Urtica dioica). However Small Nettle (U. urens) and the related species, Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria judaica) and Hop (Humulus lupulus) may also be used.

Habitat : This strong-flying migratory species may be seen in almost any habitat, from sea-shore to town centres and the tops of mountains.

In spring, each newly arrived male defends its chosen territory vigorously. These territories are situated initially on bushy hillsides, in corners of sheltered gardens, or in sunny clearings in woodland or parkland, and may be held for a week or more if conditions are suitable for flight. Females are usually seen near nettle beds except when nectaring.

Later in the season, any flower-rich habitat is likely to attract the butterfly, including gardens where buddleias, stonecrops, and Michaelmas-daisies are all popular with Red Admirals. They also favour orchards where fruit is rotting on the ground.

Bonjour Valerie!
One of my favourite butterflies. This one looks rather old and tired :-) Good composition with leaf, nice details. Poor insect without umbrella :-)

Hi Valerie,
Nice macro work again!
This must be an older butterfly since it looks like it he is pretty worn out...
Well captured from a good point of view, giving a good impression of the insect!
If I were you I'd try to lower midtones a tad in levels, and maybe add some contrast? Low lighting conditions can do with a little help sometimes...
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Valerie,
Sharp and clearly seen picture. POV and composition are great. May be this particular one went through many fights for territory. Very well done and TFS.

Hi Valerie,
Excellent capture on this Red Admiral. Beautiful colors and sharp detail. I agree that this one is probably near the end of his life cycle, and that is why he is looking ragged. Nice shot!
Scott

Hi Valerie, nice close-up. Excellent colours and sharp details. I even like the pattern that the marks create on the leafs. A bit like the leaves the butterfly looks as if it has been through a rough time. Well done and TFS.
Dean.

Hi Valerie,
This one is almost at the end of its cycle. But still has its beauty and you captured it very well. The sugestions about the colors have been addressed in the WS. I like you composition and the lighting.
