-- Catonephele numilia (Nymphalidae, Limenitidinae)
is a colourful species, but as is also true for many ohter species of the family Namphalidae, particularly for those of the subfamilie Charaxinae and Limenitiinae, wings are usually closed when resting. The underside wing pattern of the female C. numilia shown on the picture is also beautiful but not so colourful as the upperside pattern. Even more colourful is the upperside wing pattern of the males showing large orange-brown spots and a blue hindwing margin on a otherwise black background. But it is not only the colour pattern which differs between male and femala numilia, it is also th e wing shape: males do not possess a protruded forewing apex.
The species occurs throughout central America an extends south to Argentina and forms several subspecies within this large area.
The subspecies from Costa Rica shown here is:
-- ssp. esite (Felder, 1869).

Forewing length: about 35 mm

Bonne macro,la netteté est bonne et les couleurs sont justes. Par contre domage que la tête du papillon soit moin visible.

Merci!
joseph

Hello Peter,
This species is totally unknown to me, nor did I know that there are limenitids in C. America.
So at least one member of TN has gained a little more knowledge thanks to your fine, well composed picture and your info.
TFS, regards, Ivan

I rather like the blurr in this picture it makes it look soft and the brown pattern on the underwings is beautiful. Nice composition.
Thanks, Ulla

Hi Peter,
If the underwing of this species is that attractive, the upper wing must be a joy to behold. It is true that some of these good looking creatures fold their wings at rest.
Superb POV, DOF and colours. The details on the wings are very clear and sharp.
Well done and TFS.

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter

This is an excellent shot an a very beautiful composition at the same time! :)
The details are super sharp, the POV excellent, the colors lovley and the light great. The shallow DOF works very well to concentrate all the attention on the head of the butterfly, while the dark BG looks excellent in contrast with the leaf it is resting on.
Very nicely done!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Peter,

Good picture of this brownish butterfly. I like your pov and dof. The exposition is correclty managed too. Maybe a aperture of f8.0 or greater could have help to have the whole butterfly in focus. Good job and TFS,

Michel
