Another bat species :) This time it is a Barbastella barbastellus (English name: Barbastelle bat). Body size: 14g, wingspan - 28 cm.
Usually this species is wintering in cold places like caves, hollows scooped out in a tree trunks, or - like specimen from this picture, in German bunker from the 2nd World War localized in Jelen, Spala Landscape Park, Central Poland.
As other Chiroptera also this species in protected by Polish law. It is also included in European programme "NATURA 2000".

A few interesting details from the history:

- the latin name "Chiroptera" means "hand-wings".

- Gypsies believe that bat brings a good luck.

- Ancient Romans believed that bats repel bad luck.

- in middle ages Christians used to think that bats are "the sons of devil".

- in black magic bones of the bats were used in amatory incantantions.

- today in China a symbol "five bat wings" means hapiness, and Chinese word "fu" (=bat) means "success", "prosperity".

- until XIX century in Poland bats were classified as birds, and in West and East part of Europe as "strange kind of mouse".

- in ancient Greece and some parts of Africa, bat was a symbol of vigilance.

Hi Radek!

Crucified bat :-) I like its pose very much. Animal is detailed and with good light which is very hard to get in cave. POV is also good. Interesting surface - it looks like rusted metal [I read your note - it is rusted metal ;-)]. Overall very interesting post.

Hello Radek,
Nice upside down POV, and good exposure in the bunker - sometimes it's tricky for the flash.
Just one hint for better colours - I see some delicate magenta colouration in the surfaces where light of flash is reflected. Usually this occurs when the camera white-balance mode is set to "auto". It's way better for the colours to set it to "flash" when you rely only on such light. The colours will be slightly warmer - test it first on people. It's especially well visible on human skin.

Your notes are interesting. And, unfortunately, the clergy
of some cults and sects of Christianity still teach, in remote places such as the islands of Azores, that the bat is the "devil". I've personally witnessed the ordinary folk doing their best to exterminate them from their fields.
Ignorance!!! What a pity.
Bats are the most essential elements of our lives.
This capture is very unique.
Focusing is excellent. Clarity is also excellent.
