This is a 12 mm big Shield bug species, (Heteroptera; Pentatomidae; Carpocoris pudicus (Poda, 1761)). The species has a Eumediterranean distribution, reaching Middle Europe in the North and the Caucasus in the East. The animal depends on sandy places and is not a frequent sight. I did not spot this one in my backyard, but on the Southern shore of lake Neuchâtel, la Grande Cariçaie. In the workshop section I present another individual, from Valais.
ID: There are four Carpocoris species in my region and C. purpureipennis looks very similar. In addition to that, there is much color variation. The second antennal segment is distinctly longer than the third one in the case of C. pudicus and in C. pudicus the black dots on the anterior scutellum form 4 spots; in C. purpureipennis these spots fuse.
